The Art of Coaching

What makes a good coach? David Parker tackles this with a touch of Sun Tzu.

57 Mt Pleasant Street (part 5): World Cup Australian Football (The Now)

The AFL finals are our World Cup. This year we have Adelaide exuberance, West Coast alacrity, Fremantle relentlessness, North Melbourne randomness, Hawthorn force and Sydney graft. We have particular styles of play played by each team. We have stereotyped characteristics of each team and club, all playing the same game, governed by exactly the same rules. And E. Regnans says footy is now, not next year, but right now.

Time and Space – James Coventry

James Coventry is an ABC sports commentator based in Adelaide. Robert Walls’ time at Fitzroy is the subject of this extract from his book Time and Space, which is a history of strategy, tactics and coaching innovation in Australian football.

Round 8 – Geelong v Carlton: Dog Eat Dog

Matt Watson notes how AC/DC’s ‘Dog Eat Dog’ could well have been written with foresight to describe the predicament that Mick Malthouse and Carlton FC currently finds themselves in.

Coaches – Unlocking/Suppressing Potential

The improved performance of Fremantle and Port Adelaide since the changeover of coaches begs a few questions. Does anybody have the answers?

Facing my son in the nets

From initial bowling lessons off two steps, to giving his dad a bruise on the knee with a fast delivery, Sean Curtain recalls his son’s improvement with the cherry and the willow.

I’m still standing

And so it came to pass, that Guy McKenna was all alone. Not just in the AFL ranks, as he’s been the only winless coach for a number of weeks, and it seems that they’ll again need the words to the song written up on cue cards should they break the drought in 2012. After [Read more]

Heave Ho – lid’s back on

Richmond are improving, and possibly can still be finalists, but as far as getting ahead of yourself goes, this Richmond week rivals the 2012 Carlton Premiership. Lethal or Mick? A hypothetical

by Jeff Dowsing If you flat out refuse to deal in hypotheticals, then by all means click the ‘back’ button now. Fair enough too, I’m not usually one for hypotheticals either, it’s a bit too Bruce McAvaney for my liking. Actually Bruce, or more so his employer, lead me to my subject. Seven has certainly [Read more]

Welcome to the new Coach

If i was an AFL coach….

In all honesty i can’t see the day where there will be a female AFL coach. Just look at the other codes as proof. Soccer has the balding/salt and pepper haired, red faced animated males who look like they are about to explode on the sidelines from stress. Same goes for tennis, majority of coaches [Read more]

Coach rules

by Glenn Brownstein So the Saints have a new coach, former Collingwood assistant Scott Watters. By all accounts, he’s a little more of a players’ coach, and a little more marketing- and community-minded, all necessary qualities. If he can just keep the Saints out of the police blotter until NAB Cup time, that alone [Read more]

Other coaching upheavals

by Rick Newbery Actually, it’s hard to justify calling the removal of Tim Nielsen an upheaval, esp in comparison with the ongoing Ross Lyon saga – seeing as the only heaving up from most cricket followers would have happened if Timbo had NOT been given the bum’s rush straight after Hilditch. But who should [Read more]

Coaching Solutions

Okay, already! Alright, alright, I’ll do it. Somebody has to. I’ll coach an AFL team, damn it. Anyone see Mark Harvey being interviewed on Friday night? Died black hair, sunnies, faded grey t-shirt. He looked like another mug who hangs out at the TAB a bit too much. I mean, take away the [Read more]

Go Harvey, go!

The Age of Coaches

One of the beauties of Australian Rules Football, our game, is that it is a living thing. As much as some people yearn for the past, which is usually their youth, life changes, and football does too.    Every decade or two a change in style or innovation has taken the game forward. Changes [Read more]
