Why we love footy

by Steve Ingham It’s easy to get carried away in football. If a story is on the front page of the newspaper, if it leads the nightly news or takes up hours of talkback radio, most likely it is an ugly story. A scandal of some description. Sex. Drugs. Alcohol. Violence. Aside from the Brownlow [Read more]

Ted Hopkins

by Graham Jackson Having just read and enjoyed ‘The Stats Revolution’ I thought I might revisit a poem of mine published in the Winter 1974 number of ‘Canberra Poetry’. It’s called ‘Ted Hopkins: The Twentieth Century Identity’. I first met Ted in 1968/9, but only got to know him in the early 1970s, in Albury, some [Read more]

Crio’s bucket list

by Chris Riordan Seemingly unrelated matters have latterly caused me to reflect on great times and, indeed, the quick passing of time. Marto texted when he heard of Lionel Rose’s passing – “more memories of growing up”. Years are most easily remembered by events. Marto was with me at St Andrews in 1984 to see [Read more]

Seve: a shot of genius

The many obituaries devoted to golfing legend Seve Ballesteros are rightfully glowing. No golfer was more cavalier than Seve. And no golfer was more fearless than Seve. Very few if any golfers possess the mental and physical capabilities to win Open Championships from car parks. Check out the link below. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpcBFvZlyDk Physically, Seve’s skill largely [Read more]

The Match Report for the Round 7 (aka the bye)

by Paul Harkin The weekend started off slowly. No Collingwood game on Friday night, only a boring Port versus Hawthorn. What am I going to do this weekend without the Pies to keep me from being totally nuts Saturday arrived and my wife informed me she was away all day and so was my one [Read more]

A young bloke having a go

The news of the passing of Lionel Rose was very sad indeed and brought back a few memories.   I was appointed to Yallourn North Primary School in the early 1960’s and every now and then I would head back to Melbourne for the odd weekend.  One Sunday afternoon on my way back to Yallourn I [Read more]

Folks (radio link follows) In tribute to Lionel Rose….. have a listen to this call of the last round and the decision of his world title fight with Fighting Harada in Tokyo in 68 I was 14 at the time and listened to it broadcast down a phone line from Tokyo on my transistor. I think I [Read more]

Essendon, West Coast and Lionel

Once upon a time, a mate of mine and I created the “Let the Eagles Fly at Yarraville Action Faction” for the” Coodabeen Champions”, at that stage broadcasting on 3RRR.  We got a few honourable mentions for our entries  and even had a victory one week.  I would still like to see the Yarraville VFA [Read more]

Chasing the Bush Premiership V

After sitting 2-0 on top of the ladder the Imperials went into their 3rd round clash against the reigning premiers and other Murray Bridge side, Ramblers, full of confidence.  We had some key outs but the general feeling was there was enough depth to cover that and we’d give a good account. I was named [Read more]

Hello old friend

Six weeks in and I’m off to see my first game of VFL football at the North Port Oval for season 2011. Gary Ayres’ Port Melbourne, 4 wins & no losses, are off to the best start for a Borough side since the 1999 model, coached by Darren Crocker, commenced their season 4-0. Port’s efforts [Read more]

Deconstructing Collingwood

Collingwood is in a re-building phase. Not the team, but the old ground. The Magpies haven’t played an AFL game at Victoria Park since 1999. Local teams, including the Collingwood reserves in the VFL, have been playing on the oval for nigh on a decade as parts of the ground have fallen into disrepair.

The Tigers come of age

Last week, I saw Matthew White kick a goal. It wasn’t an overly pretty one, more of a helicopter off the inside of the boot. But it did the job. I expected maybe a subtle waggle of the finger or perhaps a loving embrace with Benny Nason, who was nearby. But he did neither. Instead [Read more]

Three in a row for the Tigers

Going into this game, I was unusually quietly confident of a third successive victory for my beloved Tigers. Unusual, in the fact that I’m always hoping for a win, but never believing that we could actually pull it off. This attitude is a reflection of the Richmond players at the moment, as Damien Hardwick noted [Read more]

Nick Unloads

North Need To Toughen Up

This was the moment. I looked on, nervously. Could we do it? I swung my leg back and forth, trying to stretch it out as much as I could. I turned my eyes to the middle of the field. The pivotal contest was about to finish. Who would come out unscathed? It happened. Waaia were [Read more]
