The 2020 Furphy Literary Award short list announced

No doubt Almanac writers threw their hat in the ring of the Furphy Literary Award. It has been an enormous success with 850 entries (and a further 250 entries in the junior sections). Here are the short lists. The winners will be announced later this month and the virtual presentation will occur on July 25.

After Brisbane’s resounding victory over Port Adelaide (typified by Brisbane’s superior defence), Royboy Phil Hill is extremely confident in their chances for season 2020.

Round 5 – West Coast v Sydney: There’s been a long time between drinks!

Cathi Johnston was nervous about her Eagles’ poor start to 2020. A massively improved performance on Saturday against Sydney gave her reason to hope that a return to Optus Stadium could kickstart West Coast’s season.

Round 5 – Brisbane v Port Adelaide: Where does that leave us now?

With the crowds back and some free-flowing footy being played, Sam Evans is loving the Lions’ approach to the 2020 season. Their win against the ladder-leading Port Adelaide gave him hope.

Going into Friday’s clash expecting a classy win, Richard Moody was shocked with what his Pies dished up. His FPS report details the varying emotions he experienced as Collingwood rallied to make a late comeback.

Round 5 – Collingwood v Essendon: Give me Julia and Maynard ahead of cold Pies

The Pies toyed with Sean Mortell’s emotions on Friday night, although he’s willing to admit the Bombers deserved to win.

Round 5 – Carlton v St Kilda: Could we back up?

Coming off a couple of good wins, Matt Harvey’s Carlton couldn’t make up the ground as the Saints proved too strong at Marvel Stadium.

Round 5 – Collingwood v Essendon: Catching That Winter Sun

Nicole Kelly spends time with the kids at Port Fairy getting herself ready for the Pies clash against Essendon. The joy of the beach and the winter sunshine were the holiday highlights. Apart from young Daicos, the match wasn’t.

Almanac Cricket: Sir Everton Weekes – a tribute

Bob Utber is one of the lucky few who got to watch the West Indies’ three W’s tour Australia in 1951-52. Although the late Sir Everton Weekes may not have flourished down under, he still left his mark on Aussie crowds.
