The hastily revised AFL guide to commonly used terms for season 2013

Recent events in the sporting landscape have led to the AFL, in conjunction with Channel 7, releasing a revised media guide and glossary on official changes to commonly used terms in football for the 2013 season.

Sean (and Shane’s) Muppet Manifesto for the Papacy

The news overnight that the ridiculous ACB Rotation policy has now spread to Rome is proof that the Informed Papal Section policy is ruining the game.. It is clear those in charge are Muppets.

Sean’s Muppet Manifesto for Australia

Sean Curtain takes inspiration from The Warne Manifesto to come up with his own plan of attack for Cabinet.

The greatest trick cricket ever pulled

Sean Curtain invites us to consider the game of cricket and wonders whether ‘fresh eyes’ will help us understand cricket’s current marketing strategy and approach to the game generally.

The footy, and its massacre of the English language, is back!

Say what you want about Healey, Slater and the rest of the Channel 9 cricket folk, or Bruce and his stats and passion, nothing mangles the English language like the return of the footy season!!

1980s US comedies – A pointless yet valuable discussion

A wise philosopher in a fine film once said, “Man’s got to know his limitations” I am acutely aware of mine, and if I was ever in doubt of them, I get reminded of them by many on a comfortably regular basis. Sean Curtain“He was born with a gift of laughter, and a sense that [Read more]

Random Summer observations

Sean Curtain’s mind filled with thoughts over the summer. They are neither insightful or earth shattering, not important or helpful, more vague and strange, and obscure and reasonably pointless. Still, he feels the need to share them.

Watson as Captain? Give me a break, we have jumped the shark

Sean Curtain is begging you. Don’t give the rumours that Watson could captain Australia in Clarke’s absence any air lest they actually come true. (And what more does Hussey have to do?)

First Test – Day 2: A record breaking day of a day of records being broken, all day

Day 1 had produced so many vital statistics and records that Sean Curtain was sure that Day 2 would be a day for not only breaking the amount of records that were either broken or set on Day 1, but also being a red letter day for records of all sorts.

Third Test – Day 5 report: WHAT ABOUT ME!!

The stage was set for Sean Curtain but the Australian capitulation left him standing all alone – like Shane Watson after another mix-up between wickets.

Facing my son in the nets

From initial bowling lessons off two steps, to giving his dad a bruise on the knee with a fast delivery, Sean Curtain recalls his son’s improvement with the cherry and the willow.

A look at past drafts: What’s your top 5?

Sean Curtain says the draft should never have been seen as the the basis for an entire side or dynasty, as teams were only looking at a handful of selections overall, and only a small number in the elite category. Melbourne should have listened to him.

We need to talk about PED

Sean Curtain asks what defines enhancement of performance and what gets ticked and what gets crossed.

If it moves, Brand it. If it doesn’t, sponsor it anyway.

With even the AFL Trade and Free Agency period now having a sponsor with Gillette plastered over everything, can it be too long before commentary of the opening round sounds like this….

Tom Scully fourth best for the Giants all year…(and other tales from club best and fairest awards)

Crowley winning Fremantle’s B&F shows how things have changed at Dockerland, says Sean Curtain, and were the low placings of Tippett and Travis Boak solely about their form? He runs the ruler over the club B&F awards.

Dear Bruce, stop the stats!

Sean Curtain makes an impassioned plea to Bruce McAvaney before the Grand Final – Enough of the Stats already!

Bless me Father, for I (may) have sinned

Bless me Father, for I (may) have sinned. Maybe it was our esteemed leader Mr Harms writing about Assumption Day recently (rightly corrected by one of the Micks amongst us as the Feast of the Assumption and a Holy Day of Obligation) but I feel the need to get religious and seek forgiveness. I recently [Read more]

Bringing back the love…

Sometimes we all need a reminder about why we love footy. For some people, they may need this gentle nudge weekly. Over the weekend, at AFL level, many Hawthorn, St Kilda and Essendon supporters may have felt the need to stop loving footy, or question the relationship they have with the game. Elsewhere, Richmond supporters [Read more]

Say it ain’t so

One thing I have learned about being a parent is that kids have to grow up and as much as you want to protect them from the world and what comes with maturity and age, you can’t always do that. One thing I have learned about junior football coaching is that you want to set [Read more]

I’m still standing

And so it came to pass, that Guy McKenna was all alone. Not just in the AFL ranks, as he’s been the only winless coach for a number of weeks, and it seems that they’ll again need the words to the song written up on cue cards should they break the drought in 2012. After [Read more]
