Cam Hooke’s Collingwood Life: Round 11 Review / Round 12 Preview
G’day to all. Have we turned a corner? Two on the trot, well above us on the Ladder. Who knows. As one whose football smarts I hugely admire reminded me “one game at a time”. Sensible words of wisdom. But I enjoyed that game, particularly against the Olde Enemy. Stressful? Yep. How were you feeling at Half Time? And, I can do without a repeat of the last two minutes of the game.
And the record between us now? Collingwood – 129 Wins; Carlton – 128 Wins; 4 Draws.
Onward and upward. Next game – Hawthorn. See below. Go Pies.
Round 11
Collingwood 11.13.79 defeated Carlton 11.9.75. Close. Sure was. For the pessimists amongst, watch the last two minutes. For the optimists watch Q3.
A couple of comments first:
- Have you noticed how cheerful our players are during the game? I think it is fabulous that they really do appear to be enjoying their footy. Keep it up; and
- I loved one of the commentator’s description of the game from the Pies’ perspective as “speed and chaos”. I totally agree. I also think it is what makes watching the game so much fun. I thought Carlton played boring football until they started to take a few risks. Then they went very close to matching us. So, who controlled the game? Each team did for periods. I’m sure you, like me, lamented those lost opportunities, particularly early in the game, but I applaud the encouragement of the team to “have a go”. How do we maintain that?
Go Pies.
Game Timeline. Have a look at the Timeline at www.afl.com.au/afl/matches/3900#timeline.
It shows the significance of the Half Time score. Was anyone not just a trifle concerned at that point? The game, Goals scored by Quarter:
- Q1 3 (us) / 2 (them).
- Q2 1 / 4;
- Q3 3 / 0;
- Q4 4 / 5; and
- Total 11 / 11. And we Won. Note the Scoring Shot differential – 24 (Us) / 20 (Them).
Summary from the AFL website?
Carlton’s Patrick Cripps led the way on the ground in contested possessions with 15 and also had a game-high eight clearances (three of these in the last quarter).
Scott Pendlebury for the Magpies had a game-high 31 pressure acts as Collingwood beat Carlton 308-249 in this statistic.

Statistics & Lessons:
Team Statistics (identifying only those numbers where there was a significant difference):
- Hit Outs 37 (us) / 19 (them). See next;
- Clearances 28 / 33. The next step. They, largely, reversed the HO advantage we had. This means their Midfield dominated ours;
- Centre 9 / 13; and
- Stoppages 19 / 20;
- Disposal Efficiency 73.9% / 75.1%. Across the whole game – not a huge difference, but look at the Inside 50 numbers, below, where it really counts. There was some distinction in numbers of individual’s with reasonable DE between the teams – 6 / 9;
- Inside 50s 51 / 56. The critical step towards goal, and our advantage in DE (next, below) made up for this number;
- Disposal Efficiency 51.0% / 35.7%. ;
- Marks 18 / 9. Compare the Marks across the game, below. This was another major advantage to us;
- Tackles 8 / 13. Not sure about this;
- Marks 95 / 86. We “owned the air” as a commentator put it;
- Tackles 89 / 60. Pressure, pressure and more pressure. Comprehensive pressure. Outstanding;
- Scoring Shots 24 / 20. Then the goals and, in this case, the Behinds?
- Goals & Behinds scored 11.13 / 11.9. And the game was Won.
Application. The sum of Contested Possessions and Tackles, as a measure of application, gives – 190 (us) / 190 (them). But for periods, the sides were each dominant.
So, what is going on? A terrific performance applauded by commentators and the coach and as fair percentage of the 80,000 spectators (plus many mute observers). The question the previous week was “How well can we play in the dry against a quality opponent?”. Well, we found out.
Best. Listed Best were: J. Daicos, Crisp, De Goey, Lipinski, Cox, Henry, Noble and Howe. It was a magnificent ‘team effort’ but I would consider adding Murphy. Howe, Murphy and Moore recorded 26 Intercepts between them, including a total of 15 Marks. The coaches included Murphy and Sidebottom in addition to others identified in the ADFCC scores. Well done.
Ground Reporting. Now, did anyone go? Ground Reports please? Or I’d love to hear from those of us who simply watched it on TV; please?
Round 12
Hawthorn versus Collingwood.
Sunday, 5 June 2022 at the MCG; bounce at 2.10pm.
Okay, out of the Eight. Hawthorn are sitting 13th on the Ladder with 4 Wins and 7 Losses and a percentage of 87.2%. This compares with our 10th place with 6 Wins and 5 Losses and a percentage of 102.9%. Current betting? $1.48 c/f $2.67. Yep, we are favourites, though not by much.
Hawthorn’s season, so far:
Round 1 – Win over North by 20 Points;
Round 2 – Win over Port by 64;
Round 3 – Loss to Carlton by 1 Point;
Round 4 – Loss to the Saints by 69;
Round 5 – Win over Geelong by 12;
Round 6 – Loss to Sydney in Launceston by 41;
Round 7 – Loss to Melbourne by 10;
Round 8 – Loss to Essendon by 27;
Round 9 – Loss to Richmond by 23;
Round 10 – Win over Brisbane by 5; and
Round 11 – Loss to the Gold Coast in Darwin by 67.
So, an interesting season, so far. Their season is certainly neither consistent nor comprehensive. They are beatable. They are coming to the game following a very embarrassing hiding from the Suns in Darwin. I always expect some kick-back in response to that particularly if there are a few returning players (like the ruck?).
The Best from each game (plus the Coaches’ reporting of each game – not many from Hawthorn, so far) gives me the Deductions and the list of players to watch.
Injuries: Go to www.afl.com.au/matches/injury-list. Check later in week, particularly the availability of Lynch, Reeves and McEvoy for the Ruck. Becoming more likely that one or two of these will play.
Deductions?
I challenge anyone to make any sense of Hawthorn’s season, so far (Wins against Geelong and Brisbane; Losses against Essendon and the GC?). They have, however, on a number of occasions fought back from a sizeable deficit in Q4. Watch for this. And watch for their Midfield (see below).
In relation to that, play special attention to Newcombe in the Middle, maybe a tagging job – Adams? I loved the commentator’s description of Adams Q1 tackle last week: “When Adams tackles you, you know you’ve been tackled”. She got it right.
Who to watch?
- Mitchell – Rover;
- Wingard – also Rover;
- Newcombe – RR / Centre / CHF;
- Sicily – CHB;
- Moore – CHF; and
- Lewis – FF.
Maybe also include Koschitzke in the Ruck if Lynch, Reeves and McEvoy are still all out, injured, but there are noises relating to their availability.
Anything else, people? Your views?
Us
Injuries: Nothing new.
Team: Very hard to change a winning team after a couple of Wins. No change.
Things to do – same as previous weeks:
- Focus on the ruck battle – very important for the next step – Clearances, then the Inside 50s;
- Seek to shark the Clearances in the Centre bounces and at stoppages around the ground;
- Better establish Forward targets – a variety is essential. Please do not take Moore out of the Back 6;
- Maintain the speed of movement; avoid stoppages or delays (particularly amongst the Backline) – open the game up;
- Continue to enjoy your footy; and
- Pursue the execution of the high-intensity Game Plan for the entire four Quarters.
Your thoughts would be welcomed.
Result
- My Result. Collingwood to Win by 41 Points. BOG – De Goey with 28 Disposals, 7 Clearances, 3 Tackles and 2 Goals; Ginnivan and Henry each to get 5. Your thoughts?
Go get em, boys.
- No FTA coverage. Go to FOXTEL or Kayo. Or head to the pub.
Weather. Light rain is forecast. Likely to be slippery. Get out the boots with stops.
Round 13
Queen’s Birthday Holiday.
Monday, 13 June; bounce at 3.20pm.
Melbourne versus Collingwood at the MCG. Remember that, apart from last weekend’s Win by the Freo Dockers, the last team to defeat Melbourne was Collingwood – H&A last year (Buck’s last game as coach).
