Cam Hooke’s Collingwood Life – Round 10 Review

True Believers, hard to be too critical of that performance; disappointed yes, but not too critical.

Match Reports at http://www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2016/10/coll-v-wb and http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-match-report/afl-season-2016-western-bulldogs-see-off-injuryhit-collingwood-20160529-gp6oz9.html.

I agree Bucks’ comments regarding missed opportunities – particularly the statistic relating to the conversion of Inside 50s into goals up to the Last Change – http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-05-29/injuries-not-to-blame-for-loss-says-buckley. Optimistically we could have been a mile ahead; but then, credit to the Dogs, they didn’t roll over either.  See: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-05-29/five-talking-points-collingwood-v-western-bulldogs.

Interesting ‘Best’ with Sidebottom and Pendles (they were everywhere) then a bit of a focus on our defence – Greenwood (great performance tagging Bontempelli), Reid and Howe – rocks in defence.  I’d also add Smith (see below), Blair and a couple of newbies, Oxley and Crocker, to the list.

I have two areas of concern regarding our performance (both ongoing concerns):

  • Control of the stoppages.  We lost the Clearances 23 to 31.  While statistically we won the Hit Outs (36 to 32), clearly (and as observed during the game) these were frequently “not to our advantage”.  A look at Grundy’s numbers identifies his 17 Disposals @ 58.8% Disposal Efficiency and six Clangers; and
  • I felt, frequently during the game that there was way too much “kick and hope” by us, including into the 50.  Steele’s numbers (26 Disposals @ 62.5% Disposal Efficiency and five Clangers), Pendles (32 @ 62.5% and five) and Treloar’s (31 @ 77.4% and four) highlight this, whereas Smith (not listed in the Best) had 22 Disposals @ 95.5% and 2 Clangers – well done.

Injuries.  A few injuries from the game – Tooves – concussion – probably okay to return; importantly Adams’ hammy – looked serious; and Fas and Darcy – shoulders – don’t know.  May be some opportunities for ‘some returns’ – will make selections interesting later in the week?

Reporting?  Did anyone attend the game? Ground Reports pls?

And, much as I am not a fan, check Eddie Betts’ serious contender for ‘Goal of the Year’ –http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/afl-season-2016-eddie-betts-kicks-goal-of-the-year-contender-for-adelaide-20160529-gp6eso.html.

Next. Sunday, 5 June, Port at the G; bounce: 1.10pm.  More on this later in the week.

Keep the faith. Believe.  Go Pies.
