Almanac NFL: The Joey Harrington Cup 2023 – Week 6

Greetings Tipsters

It was announced this week that Anthony Richardson, #4 draft pick and four games into his pro-football career, is having surgery on an injured shoulder and won’t be back til next season. He’s what they call a ‘dual-threat’ quarterback, making yards with his arm and with his legs, which sounds like a good idea except that they seem to get injured a lot.

In Richardson’s case, he was tackled on a designed run, the shoulder was driven into the ground and AC joint sprained. In a league where running backs are less valued the ever cos they get injured so often, why would you do that with your most prized asset? Richardson was looking good – good arm, seemed calm, a real competitor but maybe too much so. He’s already had a concussion this season.

Of course, a mobile quarterback can be a good thing, extending plays, getting creative – Josh Allen can hurdle defenders on his way up the sideline, f’’rinstance – but the longer you hang onto the ball the more likely you are to get sacked (looking at you, Sam Howell) and injured. If running backs are no longer getting decent contracts cos they’re career can be almost over by the time the rookie deal expires, why would you ask the most valuable player on thee team to do their job for them?

At least Anthony knows he isn’t gonna get hit any more this season. Bryce Young, #1 pick, may be a shade envious. The Panthers traded a lot to move up the draft for him, a college quarterback highly rated in every facet of play but one. His size. At 5’10 and 180 wringing wet, he’s tiny. (for comparision, average height & weight is 6’2.5 & 219) Short quarterbacks have to move around a bit more so they can see downfield – Russ Wilson, 5’11, and Drew Brees, 6’0, have both won Superbowls but, crucially, weighed 30lbs more. Bryce looks like a high school kid out there behind that porous O line and he has no-one to throw to. Worse, Panthers is 0-6 so looks like next year’s #1 pick is going to Chicago.

CJ Stroud, the #2 pick QB, is having a great season. He’s in the fortunate position of moving to a previously disastrous team, Texans, who last year finally started to bet itself together. HC Ryans played for the team, was DC at 49ers last year, knows his way around the league. 3-3 is, for the Texans, a great start to the season and CJ has set the record for most passes before an interception. Some tales do have happy beginnings.

Cheers Tipster
