In one of the very best AFLW Grand Finals to date the Brisbane Lions have stormed home in the last quarter to defeat the North Melbourne Kangaroos by 17 points. It was a game that had everything – physicality, high level skills, see-sawing fortunes, individual brilliance and courage galore.
North Melbourne were full of effort and seemed to have the initiative at the final break when they led by 7 points. But, when the crunch came, Dakota Davidson, in doubt for most of the week and rarely sighted for the first three quarters, came to the fore with two telling last quarter goals to help Brisbane regain the lead before Lions skipper Koenen put the result beyond doubt in the last minute of play. Koenen was outstanding throughout the game and a deserving player of the match.
The result reversed Brisbane’s narrow loss in last year’s decider and marked their second premiership in the AFLW era. Coming from fourth position on the ladder, their win was all the more meritorious. North Melbourne, the slight pre-match favourites, can hold their heads high with every prospect that they’ll be there again next season.
