Almanac Books: ‘SA Footy Stars of the Past’ by Bernard Whimpress

The Footy Almanac is please to announce the publication of SA Footy Stars of the Past by Bernard Whimpress.

During his last four years as the editor of the South Australian Football Budget, Whimpress published ninety-two player profiles titled ‘Stars of the Past’. Forty years later, he has now compiled the stories into ‘SA Footy Stars of the Past’ as a reminder of the great days of the South Australian National Football League.

In this book, Whimpress draws on his extensive archive of stories and research, which includes sixty-six articles based on personal interviews with players and their families, as well as letters, newspaper articles and writing from other historians. The stars of the past featured in the book include Magarey medallists from the 1920s onwards, including Dan Moriarty, ‘Wacka’ Scott, Alick Lill and Jim Handby, as well as other legends of the SANFL – there’s even an umpire feature!
