Simon Madden was one of the finest ruckman to play Australian footy and is one of Essendon’s greats. Born 30/12/57, he played for Essendon between ’74 & ’92. He remained loyal to Essendon, despite significant offers to lure him away, playing 378 games & kicking 575 goals. He won 4 Best & Fairests, 1 Norm Smith Medal, was a 3 time All Australian, and a Brownlow runner up. He played in 2 Premierships, was captain for 2 years, and captained the Vic interstate side for 3 years winning a Simpson Medal for best on ground. He was president of the AFL Players association for 5 years. Simon is in Essendon’s Team of the Century, 5th in the Champions of Essendon, and in the Australian Hall of Fame.
Simon worked as a teacher for 15 years, becoming Vice Principal. After his playing career he did some coaching, is a business management &
motivational consultant & speaker, & plays in a classic rock band ‘Better Late than Never’ at local venues. He is a Director on Essendon’s
Board, a Director of the AFL Players Assoc. and Chairman of the Past Players’ Advisory Board.
