‘Schnozzer’ McKay Retires

He broke his nose before half-time.
A ruckman cut down in his prime.

A truth which he could not conceal:
his nose was his Achilles heel.

  1. Bill Wootton says

Excellent, Damian, although former Hawks ruckman Kanga Kennedy used to say, ‘There’s no such thing as an injury above the neck’!

  2. Thanks, Bill. Times have changed since the days of Kanga!

  3. Excellent DB, v funny. Now, without getting into the below/above the neck injury debate I do have a question. Did a broken nose really thwart a potential glorious footy career? Really? Well, we know one things from this, he aint no Hawks player, of any era. Cheers

  4. Cheers, RK. And a fair point you raise. In the mind of this (daydreaming) narrator, ‘Schnozzer’ had broken his nose many times, and this indeed was the last straw.

  5. I think this poem could have a coda about snoring.

  6. Love that one.

    Made me laugh

  7. Thanks, Les. And JTH, great observation – maybe a part two could be written about the breakdown of his marriage due to his subsequent snoring problems?
