Round 4 – Brisbane v Collingwood: Floreat Pica Society match report

Gday Picans,

I come to this game with trepidation. Our first real test for the season. Down on numbers, No Moore (Height), no Pendles(Brains), no Bobby (speed) and then at the last moment No Naicos

What can a poor boy do?

Wait and watch I guess

Q1 Started fairly evenly but Draper is definitely winning centre bounce with Ashcroft and Neale gaining clearances. Lions have much cleaner and more penetrating plays. Pies seem a bit unsure and struggle with the last kick inside fifty offensively. Lions seem to outnumber us regularly but somehow Maggies staying in it. DeGoey nowhere to be seen. He has to fill the Naicos gap in the middle. Crisp getting plenty of it. Billy Frampton and Howe holding up fairly well. 6.4-40 to 3.1-19. Once again our opposition kicks a last minute goal to see out the term

Q2 Brisbane had all the running. Lots of wasted opportunities by them gives the Pies a small amount of hope but we were outplayed all over the ground. Very few positives from the quarter. Roan Steele scored a nice goal from the pocket. I like his movement just needs to grow into the game. Crisp  still getting plenty of it and had a chance to goal but indecisively chose to pass to McStay on the goalpost. Houston did a pretty good job clearing from the backline. O’Sullivan scored a goal from the ugliest play of the day and poor old Sidey copped a rib tickler from Coleman due to a poor handball . 9.8-62 to 5.3-33

Q3 McCreery goes to Neale in the middle. Once again unforced errors are hurting us. McStay poor kicking, Half-hearted effort by McCreery, Out on the full by O’Sullivan, 50 metre penalty by DeGoey, Membrey falcons himself, McStay tries to pass from close range and almost misses the ball which dribbles to the lions. Lions We are Outsized, Outsped and Outnumbered but other than that everything seems fine!

Shultzy goaled, De Goey goaled, Quaynor was good. Our best play of the day did occur, Initiated by a good Frampton defensive punch to Daicos who weaved and passed to McCreery then a lovely weighted kick to Membrey for a goal . Bailey keeps hurting us all over the ground. Lipinski had a good chance for a goal toward the end of the quarter but kicked  lacksadaisically (if that’s how it’s spelt). 11.13-79 to 8.4-52

Q4 Unfortunately more of the same plus rain. The Desire Differential seems enormous, the lions have kicked to space all night. The Pies couldn’t create that space . The lions swarmed all night , on so many occasions it was 1 on 2 or 3. The last quarter was pretty much played in their forward line. The only highlight I can find is McStay kicking his third and fourth goal from one on one marking contests. I wonder how he would have fared with Harris Andrews on him? 17.17-119 to 10.5-65 . Should probably have lost by more considering 34 shots to 15

I must admit I’m not surprised at the outcome.
