Round 23 – St Kilda v Brisbane: Number 9, 11, 12, 21 and 25

Sunday, 28 August 2016
1:10 pm (12:10 pm Kyoto)
Docklands Stadium

Before the game, I had tough times at work, enjoyed meeting people at an international party in Osaka and got nice St Kilda presents from my good Bomber friend. His beloved Essendon won over their big rival, Carlton, on Saturday.

From my mate

Saints goods as a present from my mate

I have done fast and efficient cleaning on Sunday in order to be on time to watch our last game for 2016.

The ball was bounced, but we were not able to dominate the ball. The roof at the stadium was open and sunshine came in. Lions get used to sunshine? After tough ball moving, the away club kicked the first goal for the game.

It was not the end for a while. We allowed the opponent to kick another goal. Where was our attractive attacking footy?

But we bounced back and managed to kick five goals in the first quarter. And we led by 13 points.

Riewoldt kicked the ball from the left towards the goal square. Geary was in the right position to catch the ball dropped in the congestion. He kicked the first goal in the second quarter.

At 11:20 Nick Riewoldt took a chest mark at the left inside 50. The ball was coming from Armitage and Bruce on the midfield. Rooey had a chance to kick a goal, but missed.

I only thought he was slowing down that had been seen these days. Was he on the downhill?

The Fox Footy commentators mentioned us that it would be the last game to play as a captain for Riewoldt. My worry and sadness came up.

At 17:40 Roberton kicked the ball nicely to Riewoldt. He took a mark inside 50 for another opportunity to score a goal. The angle was good enough to finish his job.

It was great to see a Nick show on the footy field. But it was only the beginning that I had not thought at the time.

At the third quarter, he took 14 marks that was five fewer than his record. And the following quarter, the commentators mentioned audience that his record of goals was nine. He created the goal recorded in 2006.

At the end of the game, it was Nick’s day!!

We won comfortably over Brisbane with attacking footy and positive sign for 2017 came up.

Let’s see numbers of the match:

a) The number of goals Nick kicked in the match;
It was brilliant. I would be extremely happy if he kicked ten goals. To be honest I hadn’t seen a Saint kicked such number of goals. If I had, the player would be Stephen Milne.

b) The number of seconds Nick kicked a goal from the bounce;
At the third quarter, Holmes hit out the ball, Acres caught the ball and kicked towards Riewoldt. Then he grabbed the ball and kicked a goal closed the posts as it was clear ahead.

c) The number on the ladder in the 2016 season;
We were higher than had expected. I wish we could play in September. It’s sad not to win over Hawthorn or North Melbourne.

d) The number of St Kilda players who kicked goals;
It’s an evidence how we played well and nice to see many players get involved in scoring. Well done boys!

e) The number Rooey is wearing;
No need to say anything else.

f) The number of wins in the 2016 season;n
It’s double of last year’s wins. We played better than expected. I wish we could have gained more percentage to grab the seat for finals.

Twenty one

g) The number of marks Rooey took in the match;
Congratulations on your new record, the champion! I can’t believe he is 33 (he looks like 21 instead). He is very fit. He should captain the club next year as a co-captain, I strongly think.

Twenty five

h) The number of goals St Kilda kicked in the match;
The most goals in the season. I was very happy to see big attacking footy. Grant Thomas would be happy too.

Saints did well this year. Midfielders have done great team works with balls. Handballs, kicks and runs. Jack Steven, Seb Ross, Jack Newnes and David Armitage are great. Leigh Montagna still runs well. Tom Hickey’s hit outs are awesome. Jason Holmes is good at hits out too.

Geary and Roberton are doing good jobs in the back line. Sam Fisher is good too. I hope he still plays in 2017.

Tim Membrey and Marverick Weller are good goal kickers. And Paddy McCartin’s braves are what I admire.

Nick Riewoldt is playing well even if he has been switched to the wing (midfield).

Jake Carlisle will be a good defender as well as Hugh Goddard. Paddy will be strong next year.

I’m excited to see the strong and talented club next year. Only a few days have passed since the end of my footy, I already miss Saints in action.

2017 will be a good season for the mighty Saints and the first time for me to watch the game at the stadium.

About Yoshihiro Imagawa

Love, passion and pride are seen on the footy that is the biggest part of my life. 1. St Kilda Club member: I am a passionate and crazy Sainter. Just hope we will win the second flag soon, especially after Dogs and Tigers having ended long premiership draughts. 2. The Osaka Dingoes Player and Public Relations Officer: Player number 44 that I chose to honour Stephen Milne with my wish being like a small forward like him. Lenny Hayes' hardworking attitudes are adopted on my trainings and practices. Nick Riewoldt's great plays are in my player audiobook too. 3. Writing: Here on the Almanac and also on the World Footy News. My skills utilise on great footy websites.

  1. Neil Anderson says

    I am really envious when I see someone kicking a bag of goals for their team. The Bulldogs have just grafted out enough wins to play final’s footy, but it’s been a long time since one of their players has kicked a bag of goals.
    Great to see a big win for the Saints in the final match with so much to look forward to with those inclusions for next year.
    Well done with your reports on the Saints whether they were winning or losing. Not like some of us who were not so keen to write something when the going got tough.

  2. Thanks Neil.

    I was so really happy to see a bag of goals was kicked. Riewoldt is a super champion.

    I reckon Libba and Stringer have such abilities. It might be hard to do like did Nick these days because of tackles. I think enough space is needed to score goals and goals by a gun forward.

    It was a big challenge to write match reports every week. I spent a lot of time including watching replay. But it’s all good and worth to do. It’s like not leaving the game even if we are lagging a lot (e.g when we played West Coast in Perth).

    Good luck with the final series for your Bulldogs. I want your club to win the flag this year.

    All the best
