Round 11 – GWS v Brisbane: No one ever built a statue to Judas

GWS v Brisbane

There are failings in every game. The failure to hold the mark. The failure to take the wind into account. Some of those mistakes have no impact whatsoever. Some of them kill you.

But they are things that players do. Supporters can’t do anything about those. But they can fail on other fronts. Like loyalty.

I had thought about my tips for a while. They always tell you to bet with your head and not your heart. The injury depleted Giants hadn’t been too far off the pace but hadn’t been able to win the close ones against the good teams and had been flogged on occasion. Last week they lost to the Eagles.

On the other hand, Brisbane had been demolished by Geelong but they had an all-star cast and had won two flags in two years. So when I tipped, I tipped Brisbane. The tip looked even safer when Lachie Whitfield hurt his hamstring before the game.

Both sides tore off in the opening quarter and the game tottered between both in the first half. The Giants were up by a goal at the big break but it looked like anyone’s game.

Then the third quarter.

The Giants kicked 14 goals to zero in a blitz and also league third quarter record. Jake could be 50m out with his back to the goals, spin on one foot and kick the goal from the boundary. Toby just kept plugging through the middle. The rest of the team lifted for their best game of the year. At the end it was their highest score ever and they still have more players to come back.

So I lost the tip. To make the shame even greater, in my guilt, as I had walked into Engie Stadium, I had placed a bet on the Giants to win. It only made the betrayal worse. No one ever built a statue to Judas. I was proud of them. Not of me.
