Almanac Opinion: Jordan De Goey

People love to hate. Love it! Hating. Every year or two someone comes along to fit the bill. Sometimes the player deserves it, but often not. The anger far exceeds the crime. Just read the comments flying around social media about Jordan De Goey. The flaming torches and pitch forks are out! Villagers are storming the castle as we speak.

Comment after comment frothing as they say what scum he is, and speculate various punishments from banned for life to decapitation. All typed with such righteousness and vitriol.

My first reaction is: ‘How small are their lives?’ Not their opinion, but the volume. The personal offence taken!

My second, and far more important; ‘Why do they, these people that boil over about Jordan no obeying the law, have no respect for the law, for due process?’ These things our society is built on.

None.

Jordan has been charged, not convicted. The groping allegation has already been dropped.

‘But there’s a pattern with him, it’s obvious he did it!’

What idiocy! What contempt! Goddamn, I hate a mob!

I’ve worked in nightclubs. I’ve seen the innocent, the victims, accused, kicked out, charged, seen it time and again. A scuffle, chaos, kick out or book everyone, details later. Seen people defend their friend, without realising what they have done. I am not saying he isn’t guilty, I’m saying right now we don’t know.

We have courts. We have the law.

To which morons counter: ‘Where there’s smoke, there’s fire’ The way of the lynch mob. The Neanderthals. There is a reason, in a court of law, you are not allowed to list a person’s priors before their trial. It sways you from the facts. The evidence. What actually happened.

The rest is just gossiping hens.

Jordan De Goey is a human being. Do I like him? I don’t know him. Probably not. But that’s not the point. He deserves the same right as any of us; Innocent until proven otherwise. I am not saying he did it. I am not saying he didn’t! Not at all.

I’m saying, right now, the public sway makes me sick to my core.

  2. I said to a Carlton supporter that Jordan would be a good player to pick up. He just looked at me incredulously and said “”You’re talking shit Dan”. I agree Matt, he hasn’t been charged with rape and maybe he was provoked.
It’s the same with the Cleo Smith case.

Extrapolate the subject in this article to the many issues that abound and it is all the same. This is my first read on De Goey and the recent stuff. I am with you on this one Matt.
