Greetings Tipsters
Detroit beat the living hell outa Dallas. Aidan Hutchinson broke his left tibia.
I can’t take any joy from the win. Hutch is irreplaceable. He’s the best at his job in the League and may have copped an injury that will destroy a career that was on a Hall Of Fame trajectory.
He’s a Michigan kid, 6’6″, 290lbs of strong, mobile intensity, rushing off the edge of the D line and hitting the quarterback hard. It doesn’t matter what type of football you play, the tibia and femur are valuable and many champions have broken one or the other and never returned to previous heights. Yeah, sure it may have destroyed our Superbowl chance, but it’s the effect on his future career that really cuts me.
NFC North is the hot division. Damnit, can’t we ever be fantastic in a shit division? Not this season when, all up, the teams are 17 from 22. Flipping heck, I expected Packers would be good, and there was a slight chance that Bears might be okay. But the bloody Vikings at Five and Zip? With Sam Darnold under centre?
Kevin O’Connell is a good offensive style of a Head Coach. He set up Kirk Cousins for his best seasons. No surprise that he is getting the best out of Sam, who was a #3 draft pick, by the Jets, no less. Plus, Brian Flores is the DC, he is allegedly a genius. I tried to watch a vid analysing his D formations but I had to quit. Lacking a PhD in quantum mechanics really does set you back sometimes.
So far there’s only been one intra-divisional game – the Vikings narrowly beat the Packers – so speculation that all four might make the playoffs is a tad premature, albeit tantalising. The Lions play the Vikings this week, it’s not quite a must-win but close enough.
And we will have to do it without our best D player, the man that really sets the tone on that side of the ball. Rumour has it that the team are checking out some of those players, like Haasan Reddick who has been holding out and racking up fines to get a fat new contract from the Jets (them again!), because the Lions are in ‘Win Now’ mode. This season really was meant to be a Superbowl push and something has to be done to cover Hutch’ absence. Aaron Donald, care to come out of retirement?

2018. Nic Nait knee. Gaff brain faded. Shepherd hamstrung.
What to do when your team loses some of its stars? Pray for the same for your opponents. Dusty done and Colli wobbles. Result happiness.
Get that voodoo doll out Earl and start sticking pins in some NFC North QB’s.

1985 I saw Screaming Jay Hawkins at the Tivoli in George St, where I also saw Johnny Thunders, Flaming Groovies, Albert Collins and, first time I went there at 17, New Christs and Saints.
Caught the gig a week later at Selinas where Jay played on the Nick Cave bill. Nick and band was dreary. Terrible place to get home from, I walked to St Peters.
