  1. Melbourne University Cricket Club got me thinking about doing a cricket team where the players’ surnames resemble something from school and university days. The school or university idea could also be part of the surname and the spelling can be different. The surname of the player can even be a part of a name of a school or university.

I also thought about school and university because schools have recently finished for the year, the median ATAR of schools for 2024 have been also recently published and those fortunate students will soon be deciding on which university offers to take.

Especially, for these selected Test cricketers, I thought that “Tests” would be appropriate for school or university.

As there was a shortage of openers, Carey and Head were chosen as Carey has opened the batting for the Adelaide Strikers and Head has opened for Australia in a Test match in India.

Here is the combined World Test Cricket School and University team:

    1. Alex CAREY (33 Tests Australia 2021-/Carey Grammar Baptist School)
    2. Travis HEAD (49 Tests Australia 2018-/Head Prefect)
    3. Ian BELL (c) (118 Tests England 2004-15/School Bell)
    4. Stuart LAW (1 Test Australia/Law Degree)
    5. Cameron WHITE (4 Tests Australia 2008/Whiteboard)
    6. Jonty RHODES (52 Tests South Africa 1992-2000/Rhodes Scholar)
    7. Kevin WRIGHT (wk) (10 Tests Australia 1979/Write)
    8. Bruce YARDley (33 Tests Australia 1978-83/Schoolyard)
    9. Geoff DYMOCK (21 Tests Australia 1974-80/Dymocks School Books)
    10. Bruce REID (27 Tests Australia 1985-92/Read)
    11. Glen HALL (1 Test South Africa 1965/School Hall)
12th man John BLACKham (35 Tests Australia 1877-94/Blackboard)
Coach: John Scholes (62 FC Victoria 1968/69-1981/82/School or Scholar)

This team will play an exhibition match against a team from the Melbourne University Cricket Club.

The umpire will be Dick French (Umpire 19 Tests 1977-87/French Subject).

The venue will be on the oval campus of the University of Melbourne in Parkville.

Entertainment will be provided by the song “(Remember the Days of the) Old Schoolyard”, by Cat Stevens.

If any of these players want to to learn how to play tennis, who better than the 1980 Australian Open tennis champion, Brian TEACHER, to coach them.

Transport will be provided by the school bus.

Lunch and tea will be served from the University Canteen.

Let’s hope for a good game of cricket where each player can learn something new, as well as the winning team teaching their opponents a lesson!
