Cam Hooke’s Collingwood Life: Round 1 Preview – Go Pies!

G’day to all. Remember to send me a Reply if you have other interested parties who would like to join us. There’s a couple of spots where I have identified issues you may care to comment on. Please do? Remember we are all family – there are no right or wrong answers; just views. Get into it. Please?

Firstly, and most importantly, well done Ladies, making the Finals (again; and without their top two Best & Fairest out injured). Their Qualifying Final has been delayed given the sudden Covid exposure on the group. Watch this space.

Regardless, good luck to you all.

How did I finish 2021 for the men’s competition? Oh yes, with the statement “The annoying thing is that we’ve performed, as we all know we can, out-performing every side we’ve played for limited periods. And that hasn’t changed since Bucks left. How do you turn around team behaviour?

And 2022 starts (for the men, I am consistently reminded). And the very best of luck to our team of coaches led by Craig McRae. Don’t be in any doubt that our Losses to Brisbane in the 2002 and 2003 Grannies haven’t been forgotten.

Your Task?

What do we want to see this year at the Club?

  • Well, a Premiership for the AFLW team would be nice.

How about you identify a couple of things, with your explanation and logic, and hit ‘Reply to all’?

  • As a starter, I’d like to see us dominate the Midfield. It’s all very well to dominate the Hit outs but without domination of the Clearances this is not helpful. Over to you Midfield and coaches.

  • Have you liked the recruiting?

  • How do you view the new Board?

Round 1

St Kilda versus Collingwood

Friday, 18 March 2022 at Marvel Stadium; bounce at 7.50pm. And if you are young enough, Peking Duk are performing from 7.15pm .

Previous:

Of course this detail is now seriously dated, frequently with individuals having departed, but it can be useful in identifying who plays well for us against them and by them against us. So, of the current playing group (ignoring those who’ve left):

  • 4 July 2021 – St Kilda wins by 9 points. Best – Adams, De Goey, Pendles, Daicos & Quaynor; their Best – Steele, Hill, Dunstan, Crouch, Sinclair & Membray. Key Issues – We lost Centre Clearances 8 / 13 out of General Clearances 34 / 39;

  • 20 June 2020 – Collingwood wins by 41 points. Best – Sidebottom, Grundy, Crisp, Pendles, Adams & Maynard; their Best – Gresham, Butler, Hill, Jones & Carlisle. This game was won in Q2 with a 5 / 2 goals scored advantage. The rest of the game was even. Key issues – Clearances – 32 / 21; and

  • 18 May 2019 – Collingwood wins by 41 points (no, not a typo). Best – Sidebottom, Grundy & Crisp. Just to illustrate my point, above, the other Best included Beams, Stephenson, Treloar & Reid; their Best – Dunstan, Billings, Membray, Savage, Gresham & Steele. While we had a lower Inside 50 score – 47 / 52 our Efficiency Inside 50 was much higher – 59.6% / 48.1%.

Practice Matches / Community Series:

  • There is no detail on the practice matches. The feedback after the Gippsland trip was pretty positive;

  • Collingwood were thumped by GWS (41 points (that number, again)). Best – Daicos, Pendles, Crisp & Daicos. Key issue – We lost Clearances 28 / 45; and

  • St Kilda beat Essendon by 11 points. Best – Hill, Marshall, Membray, Graham, Steele & Sinclair.

Betting:

Ads of today, St Kilda are narrow favourites to win at $1.61 compared with our $2.32. Go figure?

Teams: Out tonight?

Us?

  • Of significance, we are missing Maynard (suspended), Hoskin-Elliott and Roughead (both recovering from injuries) and Kelly (unwell; may make it).

  • Expect Daicos (the younger) and Lipinski to debut and Adams, Mihocek, Quaynor and Howe to return.

  • I really like De Goey alternating with Elliott between the Forward pocket and Midfield and like Pendles pushing further Back.

  • And I’ve been hearing hugely positive things about Grundy.

  • And didn’t Ginnivan make a difference when he appeared late last year?

  • What do we need to do?

  • Implement our Game Plan for the whole game;

  • Win the Clearances, both in the Centre and at stoppages and win the Inside 50s with the ball directed to a leading Forward;

  • Then? Score; and

  • We need to commence the drive Forward out of the Backline (or Centre) making use of ‘the corridor’ and ‘the Wings’.

  • Success will be assured.

  • Your ideas?

Them?

  • Ryder is being managed – not sure what that means.

  • Billings – injured.

Watch for:

  • Midfield – Gresham, Crouch, Jones and Steele, and particularly their rucks – Ryder and Adams, though Ryder may not play (injury management);

  • Forwards – King; and

  • Backs – Hill.

The Result? Very clearly (and quite obviously) we will Win by 41 points. BOG – Grundy with 17 Clearances, 5 Tackles and one goal. Ginnivan gets four goals; Mihocek and Elliott each get two. Your ideas?

Round 2:

Collingwood versus Adelaide

Saturday, 26 March at the MCG; bounce at 1.45pm.

Other:

  • Watch for an extended contract for Darcy Moore; maybe five years plus, then De Goey’s?

  • Is anyone going to the game? We’d love to hear some feedback from the ground?

  • Does anyone know what Eddie is up to? I always appreciated the “Eddie Watch” section.

  • Anything to add?

Go Pies.

  1. george smith says

    Looking forward to Arlo Draper and Reef McInnes solidifying their place in the team going forward, to justify the debacle that was giving up a high draft pick (Finn Callaghan) for a mess of draft choices. If either one has a breakout year or next year, well life ain’t too bad after all.

    As for Mr Callaghan, it is hard to see him breaking into the strong Giants midfield of Kelly and co. As Footscray showed on Wednesday night, sometimes you can have too many midfielders. It may be that in the future they will swap him for a ruckman…
