The pleasures of men in white at a deserted SCG

A pleasant surprise awaited Jan Courtin at the SCG. Remember when?

Almanac AFLX: What is this rubbish of a game all about?

Jan Courtin is not impressed. What’s your view?

70-year old letters come to life!

Enormous thanks to Jan Courtin who, in this post, shares with us her parents’ letters to each other during the Second World War.

The Footy Season is Upon Us: Decisions, Decisions

Jan Courtin can’t work out what to do. Suggestions anyone?

Finals Week 1 – Sydney v Essendon: What a win, but: One week at a time!

When avid Swan fan Jan Courtin forced herself from her sick bed on Saturday afternoon, determined, no matter how she was feeling, to get to the SCG, little did she believe that her beloved team would come away with such an emphatic victory.

Onwards to Victory!

The Sydney Swans amazing run into this years final has given Jan Courtin cause to burst into verse. Jan’s piece was originally posted on the Swan’s website on 1 September.

Round 23 – Sydney v Carlton: Lance Franklin 10.2.62 – Carlton 8.9.57

Jan Courtin fought off her illness for long enough to enjoy the Buddy show as he scored more than the entire Blues team.

Round 22 – Adelaide v Sydney: That Buddy-goal game. And I was there to see it!

Sydney pipped the top of the ladder Adelaide Crows on Friday night and continue to set themselves nicely for the finals. And Jan just couldn’t believe that goal by Buddy!

Round 21 – Sydney v Fremantle: Heave Ho? Not today, Freo!

Jan Courtin watches her Swans give Freo the old heave-ho.

Round 20 – Geelong v Sydney: Bloods, you bloody beauties!

Cheer! Cheer! Jan Courtin has a shiny new phone. Which she took with her to Kardinia Park where she watched her Swans thrash the Cats.

Round 19 – Hawthorn v Sydney: Bloody Hawthorn!

Hawthorn continued to their winning ways against Sydney much to the dismay of Jan Courtin. North Melbourne’s win over Melbourne was the sole pleasing aspect of the weekend for Jan.

Round 18 – Sydney v St Kilda: So Proud! And to think I could have been a Saint!

Did you know that Swan-supporting Jan Courtin could have been a Saint?

Familiar faces in strange places!

Well this is a beaut story – which features a Billie Holliday, a Buddhist nun, Brett Kirk and a council bus. [How interesting – JTH]

Round 17 – GWS v Sydney: I could gloat – but I refuse!

The stats don’t interest Jan, the speculation doesn’t interest her. All she wants is for the Swans to continue playing good hard-fought contested footy, as they have in recent weeks, then all the hype can take care of itself. Jan is a happy lady at the moment! Maybe into September? Who knows!

Almanac Boxing: Why does society put up with the brutal sport of boxing?

Jan Courtin has little to no time for boxing, a ‘so-called sport’ that she believes should be banned. She asks what do fans (and society) see in this sport where ‘prolonged and repeated brutal behaviour by one person upon another’ is encouraged?

Round 16 – Sydney v Gold Coast: The Dean Towers Cheer Squad have their say

The Almanac community has found one. Thanks to Jan Courtin for this match report which adds to the interest in Dean Towers established earlier by Matt Zurbo. And thanks to Dean Towers himself.

Round 15 – Essendon v Brisbane: Could these young Lions create their next dynasty?

Jan Courtin was fast forwarding through the Essendon v Brisbane replay, until the resurgent Lions found her hiding the remote and watching the last quarter in real time.

Round 15 – Melbourne v Sydney: The flames from hell, and those Demons!

A road trip, some classical music, Catholic guilt, mutilated cars, dead birds, live music at the RSL, and a Bugg for the confessional box are all part of Jan’s trip from Sydney to the MCG for the footy!

Round 14 – Sydney v Essendon: Plugger revisited, but this was a miracle!

It was indeed a bloody miracle writes Jan Courtin as her Swans pull off a ridiculous win at the SCG.

Round 13 – Richmond v Sydney: After 30 minutes – Why do we bother? After 120 minutes: That’s why!

Jan Courtin made the trip to Tigerland to watch the Swannies go from exasperating to exhilarating. Was it worth the bother? You bet it was.
