Almanac Teams: Players whose last game was in a Grand Final

Richmond’s Bruce Monteath [Source: Author]

This week’s teams are based on players that have played in a premiership or grand final in their last ever game.

The teams are based from 1980 once again with the premiership team in last game being perfect with 22 players. The premiership team contains five premiership captains that retired after the match in Bruce Monteath, Michael Tuck, Tom Harley, Cameron Ling and Joel Selwood.

There are some legends in the grand final team in Leigh Matthews, Gary Ablett Jnr and Bruce Doull. I also do like having Matthews, Neville Bruns and Steve Hocking as well as Darryl Wakelin and Alistair Lynch in the one team.

  1. Thanks Rodney, I was wondering about the Bruce Monteath team you mentioned. Did Brian Lake win the Norm Smith Medal in his last game. No wonder he had issues adjusting to life after football.

  2. Rodney, if you’d only gone back another season to 1979 you’d have picked up Peter “Percy” Jones.

Oh yes, I’m a tad perplexed by the year Mike Woolnough retired. Considered he started with Geelong when I was in grade 3 it seems like a very long time at the highest level.

    Glen!

  3. Luke Reynolds says

    Two really good teams there.

Slightly before my time but interesting that Ray Shaw was just 27 when he finished (or was finished up?).

  4. Superb work Rodney. I love these teams your compile and these two and no exception.

Luke, I reckon Ray Shaw retired of heartbreak (5 unsuccessful grand finals 77-81), though from memory I think Tommy Hafey might have forced him out.

  5. Thanks Dan, Lake won the Norm Smith in 2013.

Thanks Glen, maybe I could put Percy as my sub. Woolnough was in Collingwood best that day as he had second most disposals

Thanks Luke, I think Ray was mentally done and as DBalassone said there was a fallout. Shaw did captain coach Preston 1983/84 to a premiership.

Thanks DBalassone I have really enjoyed doing the teams and the research
