Almanac Poetry: ‘Warm Grey Silver’ – Tommy Mallet

Warm Grey Sliver

An exquisitely still night
comes through the door with me,
and my                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            filthy work clothes,

full moon trailing off my back,
as I enter the dark of our
one room cabin,

its unusual deep sea
silence.

Our child’s asleep,
in her bunk,
as I make myself a bedtime snack.

Vegemite on fresh bread.

The glass lid catches butter bowl’s edge
as I lift it,

ringing one sweet, loud note,

a bell going off
in her dreams.

I hope it’s a fight bell,
that she’s winning,
an awkward, sometimes lonely child,
absorbing crowd applause,

as I brush my teeth,

four hours before work’s
next call.
