Almanac Poetry: ‘So…’ – Tommy Mallet

 

 

 

So…

 

Three Japanese women sit behind me
on the tram,
speaking very softly to each other
in their native tongue –
beautiful at that volume –
like gently touching hands.

 

I close my eyes, drifting to sleep
as if carried
by whispers meant for me.
