Almanac Poetry: ‘Dear Robert’ – Tommy Mallet

Dear Robert,

The world is falling down.

Physically, spiritually.

Free

fall.

Meanwhile,

I am playing my child
‘Let’s Cook’,

a quirky Mental As Anything song.

If you don’t know them,

a quirky band,

so she might get up

and take on the day.

A song from my

childhood,

when the world was in freefall.

Spiritual and physical decline.

I’m not sure what’s changed

other than the speed of the water

down the drain.

She leaves the bedroom,

where I write,

and she climbs into our bed

most mornings,

shutting the door

so I don’t see her surprise

Christmas present for me
she’s taking to show and tell.

“No looking, Papa!”

she scolds me,

like happy games.

They no longer have fountains at

the park,

for kids to run amok in

despite the rules.

There’s no water to spare.
