Strange Dismissal
It sounds silly
but it’s harsh
to be caught Lillee
bowled Marsh,
but that’s what happened to me
the over prior to tea.
Mike Gatting
Is Mike Gatting
known for his batting?
Or was he born
to be bowled by Warne?
The memory lingers
how he waved his finger
in Shakoor Rana’s face,
but could he handle pace?
And who can recall
that Malcolm Marshall ball
that turned his nose
into the English rose?
Does he lose any sleep
over the reverse sweep
that cost the poms the Cup?
And what the hell was up
with his captaincy crusade?
Bowled over by a maid.
Virat Kohli
Is Virat
the rat?
Or is Kohli
holy?
Cricket Caste System
If Bradman is the Brahmin of batsmen,
then who is the pariah?
Well, after watching him swing a bat,
I’d have to say Muttiah.
The Fieldsman in the Floppy White Hat
His hat is a halo
that is lifted by the breeze,
but before it flies away
he snatches it
with both hands full stretch,
as if taking a screamer
at first slip.
The Old Cricketer
Every muscle in my body aches.
I can barely hold a bat.
There’s only one part of me that still works,
and I thank the Lord for that.

That Mike Gatting poem is the best cricket poem I have ever read.
Well played, mate!
V v clever Damo well played well played indeed
Cheers gents and big thanks Smokie, the life and times of “Gatt” certainly does lend itself to some light verse.
Youve done Gatt well Damian.
A reverse sweep dismissal….attitudes have certainly changed.
I liked these, DB – perhaps ‘The Fieldsman in the Floppy White Hat’ is the most inventive of the lot.
