Almanac Poetry: Always the waves
Always the waves.
How did I come to stand at the water’s edge?
So lost?
Did an alarm wake me?
Did some internal urge reach down – down – to retrieve my tired body?
I don’t know.
Did I drive my car here?
And leave it unremembered on a dune-top road? What brought me here? Why here?
I don’t know.
I do know the wind.
The wind – that buffets my skin, my hair, my clothing, my ears – too much – no –
Just enough.
I do know the birds.
The seagull that stands on the beach – turns its head to the dunes – turns back the other way.
Faces out to sea.
I do know this seagull.
It lifts its wing – and with its beak fossicks among underfeathers like a prospector. It stands now on single leg.
Still it stands.
I see the sky is where it should be.
And so – it seems – is the beach. And so – it seems – is everything.
Always the waves.
