All are welcome to join Percy Jones and the Almanackers for our next lunch at the North Fitzroy Arms. There is an umpire theme, with John Harms set to chat to Bill Deller and Murray Bird.
Bill Deller umpired 251 senior VFL games including 5 grand finals, retiring in 1981. His umpiring career almost mirrored Percy’s playing career – I am sure there must be many stories that could be told. Bill then became Director of Umpiring, retiring in 1997. He was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 1995 and in 1996 was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
Murray Bird is a Queenslander who was a junior temmate of Jason Dunstall before turning to umpiring. He was the first Queenslander to umpire at AFL level officiating in 43 senior games and worked for AFL Queensland for 17 years. He now works in sports management and is a keen sports historian and writer.
