The Furphy Anthology 2024 was launched at a terrific gathering at the All Nations Hotel in Richmond last Thursday evening (Nov 21).

The collection includes the sixteen stories which were short-listed for The Furphy Literary Award 2024 which attracted over 640 entries.
The atmosphere at these launches – this is the fifth Anthology – is always brilliant. This year Amy St Lawrence brought her family from their home in the Blue Mountains. They came to Melbourne on the train which was quite the adventure:

Amy with her partner Scott Marr and their kids Noah and Lily at the All Nations Hotel in Richmond.
Minh Hien came from Sydney with her partner. Here she is with Adam and Sam Furphy, of the Furphy family who established the award and have turned it into a national award over recent years:

In ‘My Mother’, Minh Hien presents the story of leaving Vietnam to come to Australia. It’s beautifully told, with great respect, gratitude and sensitivity.
Here they are again! With Katherine Sharpe, from Nowra on the South Coast. Katherine works in newspapers and spends what time she can on her own writing. Her story ‘E for Eternity’ draws on the elements of Arthur Stace’s place in Australian life and significantly Katherine’s words are the inspiration for Josh’s cover. It was a grand idea to present the title in the cursive hand of Arthur.

This year, Dips O’Donnell, a mainstay of Almanac writers, made the final thirty with his story ‘The Dam’.
We encourage everyone to have a crack at the award, especially Almanac writers.
