Almanac Life: Ten Things I Love

Prompted by Kevin Densley’s 1st June article ‘Ten Things I Hate’, I must admit my immediate reaction was to think of things that we love.

The first 10 that come to mind are (not including individuals):

Compassionate and empathetic people

Those who stand up to racism, sexism and homophobia

Brahms, Beethoven, Bach and Elvis

Art

Writing and reading

Films – especially British, and documentaries

Cricket – the real stuff

Aussie Rules footy

Asked what I would like as my final meal: Good quality ice cream

And dare I mention the Swans!

  1. Great list. I’m with you on most things – particularly gelato. Cricket has lost me – substitute golf. Any type of music with melody works for me – exclude hip hop, heavy metal & atonal classical.
You’ll be surprised to know that my favourite footy team is now Swans not Eagles. The black and white ones who play at Bassendean in the WAFL. Go you Black Ducks.

    Lovely thought Jan!

  3. Neil Anderson says

So close to my favorites. Most classical music that we get direct from the BBC on the Google machine.
Films are British and Australian with an Australian film night at our place every fortnight.
AFL footy of course with unfortunately having to wait a week to see the Bulldogs play again.
Last meal would involve eggs any which way.
Writing and reading which is why this web-site is so precious.

What a fantastic list! Substitute Swans for Tigers and I’m with you Jan! Though my wife’s vegetarian sausage rolls would make a great last meal – with icecream! Watching NZ v England test cricket from Lords these last two nights has reminded me just how much I love Test Cricket. Seen The Dig, by the way?

  5. Kevin Densley says

    Hi Jan.

My tongue was somewhat in my cheek with regard to listing “Ten Things I Hate”. Of course there are many, may things I love (including almost all the things on your list), but occasionally it’s an interesting exercise to take a look at the other side of the coin.

  6. Tony Courtin says

Jan,lovely thoughts, not least your favourite ice-cream at death’s doorstep. I enjoy the composers you mentioned, albeit they are placed behind rock and roll,AC/DC especially. Will you forthwith disown your philistine brother?! ??

  7. I had a go at the hate list so I had better have a go here for balance.

I would go with most types of music, there is a time and place for just about everything.

Also people who are willing to study, learn and form their own opinions.

  8. Thanks one and all

There are so many other things I could have added (as I’m sure we all could) but limiting myself to 10 had its issues. Music: other types including Blues, Jazz and Rock n Roll. Nature: the sky, the clouds, the mountains/hills/deserts/sunrises and sunsets; selfless people (probably comes under Compassionate and empathetic); and so on and so on…..

Kevin: I realise you were being tongue in cheek. What I find interesting is that humans often tend to bring up their hates and negative thoughts before positives ones! I could be wrong, but I notice it in myself sometimes! Thanks.

  9. Colin Ritchie says

Travelling by train through Italy ten years ago I noticed a stand of eucalypts which surprised me. It reminded me of what I was missing travelling Europe; the smell of the bush, particularly dry gum leaves burning, big skies, broad vistas and of course the fresh air.Truly things I love, appreciate and never take for granted.

  10. Great list Jan.

I concur, and would add a few of my own. I love Friday afternoon, into evening beers at a pub, into dinner and sport on the telly.

I love lunch as a concept – freedom (escape?), conversation and food and drink.

I especially love your B,B,B – and Elvis!

  11. Julie Cattlin says

OMG! What a difficult list to compile, Jan dear. Good you subsequently added some more.
I’ve never thought if doing either a ‘hate’ list or a ‘love’ list.
Maybe I’d say one of each.
    Kind people /. Unkind people.
But then, I could equally do a list of 20 of each.
    Anyway, thanks Jan.
    ???

  12. Many thanks Colin, John and Julie. Much appreciate your comments.

  13. Daryl Schramm says

Yes. A nice complimentary piece Jan. I just love magic moments. Those ‘you had to be there’ moments that are difficult to describe. I also love bluegrass music and this Web site.

  14. Many thanks for commenting, Daryl. Much appreciated
