Almanac Cricket: Pomborneit CC Weekly Wrap

 

 

 

Pomborneit’s Division 1 team had a dominant win to finish the home and away season, bowling Camperdown out for 34 at SA Wright Oval, chasing down the runs in the 8th over to record a 10 wicket win.
Opening bowlers Finn Tolland (1/9 from 5 overs) and Stephen Hill (3/6 from 5 overs) made big early inroads, before Danussika Bandara completely tore through the Lakers line up with 5/4 from 5.3 overs. Opening batters Dave Murphy (18 not out from 19 balls) and skipper Matt Bignelll (12 not out) made light work of the run chase, passing the score in 7.5 overs.

The Division 2 Bulls were well beaten by Bookaar at MCP Oval. The visitors batted first and made 8/190, Charlie Voutier with 3/28 from 8 overs and Stephen Walters with 2/15 the best of the bowlers. The Bulls replied with a dismal all out 58, Luke Reynolds the only player to make double figures with 22.

 

 

 

 

Pomborneit’s Division 3 team finished their season with a 9 wicket loss at Ecklin. Garry Riches top scored with 40 in the Bulls total of 170, Tayla Reynolds and Aaron Van Es both made 34 which was a personal best for both. Ecklin chased down the runs in 28.5 overs, Ollie Delaney taking the only wicket.

 

 

 

 

The Pomborneit Gold women are through to the grand final after a 29 run win over Apollo Bay at MCP Oval in Sunday’s semi final. Batting first, Gold made 4/125 from their 20 overs, Jess Moulden making a run a ball 30 retired which included 5 fours, while skipper Samantha Coxon worked hard for her 29 not out from 64 balls. Coxon and Moulden took 2 wickets each as Gold restricted Apollo Bay to 7/96.

The Pomborneit Under 17 boys team claimed the premiership in their first season in the Colac District Cricket Association Under 17 competition on Tuesday night with an emphatic 59 run win over Colac Burnett at CMTP Oval. Batting first, the junior Bulls slumped to 3/20 early on before a crucial 43 run partnership between vice captain Ben Whytcross and Gavin Reynolds got the innings back on track. Whytcross retired on 14 from 30 balls, Reynolds making 33 when he reached the 30 ball retirement mark. Brady Bernoth came in and hit the ball hard and long, smashing 22 from 16 balls including 3 fours and a six. Contributions down the order came from Josh Reynolds, who ran hard between the wickets and made an unbeaten 17, and Max Rees who made 11. Josh Reynolds finished the innings off with returning retired player Ben Whytcross, who added another 10 runs to finish on 24 not out as Pomborneit finished on 8/147 from their 30 overs.

 

A sharp catch in slips to Josh Reynolds from the bowling of skipper Finn Tolland on the third ball of Colac’s innings got the team off to a great start, then followed by a caught and bowled to Noah Riches and a Josh Reynolds run out saw Colac at 3/23. Regular wickets fell despite Colac continuing to score quickly, Noah Riches took two more wickets bowling through the middle of the innings, with Bradey Fratantaro, Isaac Cootesmith and Josh Reynolds chiming in with a wicket each. The win was sealed with two run outs, the Bulls bowling out Colac for 88.

 

A large contingent of Pomborneit supporters were at the game, CMTP Oval became a sea of maroon and gold as the Bulls community joined the players to celebrate the win. Gavin Reynolds was awarded the player of the match medal for his 33 retired from 30 balls and 0/16 from 4 overs. Captain Finn Tolland accepted the premiership cup to mark a most successful foray by Pomborneit into the Colac Under 17 competition. The win was celebrated back at the Pomborneit clubrooms by all players and many parents and supporters despite it being a Tuesday night, all players involved being presented to the crowd.

Pomborneit’s Under 17 girls are also through to the grand final after defeating Bookaar in the semi final at MCP Oval on Sunday morning. Pomborneit bowled Bookaar out for 41, Neave Thompson with 4/2 from 2.3 overs starring with the ball, while opening bowlers Lucia Clarke (0/10 from 4 overs) and Nellie Sadler (2/13 from 4 overs) were particularly impressive with the new ball. While there was some stutters along the way. Pomborneit eventually passed Bookaar’s score in the 9th over for the loss of 5 wickets.

 

 

 

 

The Under 14 boys made it through to their grand final after a tense, tight game at CMTP Oval on Friday night. Irrewarra Red batted first and made 9/132 from their 30 overs. Josh Reynolds with 3/10 from 5 overs and Max Rees with 2/20 from 5 overs were the best of the bowlers, while Archer Blomfield also took 2 wickets. In a very exciting run chase the Under 14 Bulls only passed the score in the 30th over. George Sadler (24 retired) and Jonty Raven (18 retired) both made the 24 ball retirement mark, Marc Van Es made a hard hitting 19 from 14 balls, but it was Sam McConachy (18 not out) and Dermot Conheady (21 not out) who got the team over the line and into the decider.

 

 

 

 

Pomborneit Under 14 co-captain Josh Reynolds has taken out the Under 14 cricketer of the year award at the Colac District Cricket Association presentation night on Monday at the Colac RSL.The 13 year old took out the award with 641 points via his 211 runs, 16 wickets and 13 catches throughout the season, thanking his club and the Colac District CA in his speech.

Both Pomborneit Under 13 girls teams have finished their seasons after losing their respective semi finals. Pomborneit Gold were well beaten by Tomahawk Creek at Colac’s Western Oval, Isla Spokes top scoring with 16 in Gold’s 67 all out, Alexis Leahy and Elisha Boyd taking a wicket each as Tomahawk Creek racked up 2/137. Maroon lost a thrilling game via arun out on the last ball of the day. Irrewarra batted first and made 7/104, Emily Reynolds the best of the bowlers with 2/4 from 2 overs. Maroon fell agonisingly close in reply, making 6/101, Stella Hinds top scoring with 8.

 

 

 

 

 

 

A fantastic night was had at the annual “Bullnanza” draw last Saturday night, a record number of tickets sold, a great crowd in attendance and wonderful entertainment from Matt Sell. Congratulations to the Whitehead family on taking out the major prize.
