Almanac Cricket: Pomborneit CC Weekly Wrap

Despite a poor batting effort from the Bulls, the Division 1 game at MCP Oval on Saturday went down to the wire, with Cobden winning and taking over top spot on the ladder. Apart from a 74 ball 51 from the in-form Tom Darcy there was little to write home about the Bulls batting as they struggled to 142 all out in 48 overs. Finn Tolland continued his knack of picking up an early wicket as Pomborneit then proceeded to bowl tightly and make the chase very difficult for Cobden. Danussika Bandara was almost impossible to score off, conceding just 7 runs from his 10 overs, including 7 maidens. Cobden passed Pomborneit’s score in the 49th over 5 wickets down in a tense and interesting run chase.

Pomborneit stalwart Dave Murphy played his 350th senior match for the Bulls in the Division 1 match against Cobden at MCP Oval on Saturday.
Murphy made his junior debut in the 1993/94 season, his senior debut coming in the 1996/97 season.
In 350 games, Dave has made 8638 runs with 6 centuries and 52 fifties. The Pomborneit Cricket Club’s most prolific wicket-keeper of all time, Dave has taken 344 catches and 121 stumpings.
A former club treasurer, Murphy is 6 seasons into his second stint as club president.
Dave is a 5 time Division 1 premiership player (2007/08, 2008/09, 2018/19, 2019/20, 2020/21), a four time Twenty20 premiership player (2018/19, 2020/21, 2022/23, 2023/24) and a two time Under 16 premiership player (1994/95, 1997/98).
Pomborneit CC secretary Luke Reynolds described his long time club mate Murphy as “the ultimate clubman who bleeds maroon and gold. He’s truly a modern day great of the club, I don’t think he gets enough recognition for how good a player he has been and continues to be. His batting alone has been ultra consistent, his wicket-keeping has gone next level in the past 6 years with his work to our Sri Lankan spinners”. Reynolds went on to praise the current club president for his work in that role “I could make a case for Dave being the best president in Pomborneit CC history, he gets things done, is innovative and has a great relationship with our sponsors. To keep going in committee roles you need to keep up to date with how cricket is developing and be fresh with your ideas and Dave certainly continues to tick those boxes”. The Pomborneit CC honoured Murphy with a speech at their junior premiership reunion on Saturday night.
