Almanac Cricket: Pomborneit CC Weekly Wrap

Pomborneit’s Division 1 team have turned around a big loss to Heytesbury/Princetown back in Round 2 with a 6 wicket win over the same opposition in Saturday’s match at MCP Oval. Heytesbury/Princetown batted first after winning the toss and were in control early with a 53-run opening partnership, then the second wicket fell with the score on 80. The visitors then proceeded to lose their next 8 wickets for thirty runs, Pomborneit’s trio of spinners taking all 10 wickets between them as the Storm were dismissed for 110 in the 44th over. Danussika Bandara was miserly with 4/18 from 10 overs, skipper Matt Bignell took 4/29 from 9.1 overs, while Tharaka Sendanayake took 2/18 from 8 overs. After two early wickets in the run chase, Grant Place and Tharaka Sendanayake consolidated, Place making 59 from 75 balls including 4 fours and 2 sixes, with Sendanayake making 25 as Pomborneit passed the score in the 22nd over for the loss of four wickets. The Bulls have now moved a game clear of the Storm on the ladder.

The Division 2 Bulls lost the toss and bowled first against Bookaar at the Camperdown No.2 Oval and had a hard time of it with the ball, taking just three wickets as Bookaar racked up 241 from their 40 overs. Junior player Levi Cootesmith took the new ball for the first time at senior level and did well with 1/19 from 5 overs, Hunter Reynolds and Hunter Thompson also took a wicket each, while young spinners Fletcher Tolland (0/40 from 7 overs) and Josh Reynolds (0/36 from 7) bowled well on what was a very quick ground. A 95-run opening partnership between stand-in captain Luke Reynolds and Alex Downie, making his debut for Pomborneit after recently moving to the area, got the team off to a great start. Downie hit the ball well in making 42 from 50 balls, including 6 fours and 1 six before being the first wicket to fall. Reynolds ended up making 82 from 70 balls with 10 fours and 3 sixes before being dismissed. Simon Tolland (38 from 36 balls) and Levi Cootesmith (21 from 24 balls) took the Bulls to within 20 runs, but the team collapsed once that pair were out, to be all out for 235 in the 38th over.

The Division 3 Bulls were well beaten by Ecklin, stand-in skipper Garry Riches top scoring with 20, while Aaron Van Es was the pick of the Pomborneit bowlers with 1/23 from 6 overs; the other wickets went to Jhai Gavin and Harley Reynolds.

The Under 17 boys returned after the Christmas break on Tuesday night and had a good win over West Warrion at Colac Secondary College Oval. West Warrion batted first and got away to a good start before the junior Bulls’ bowling tightened up, resulting in regular wickets as West Warrion made it to 9/127 from their 30 overs. Noah Riches bowled a great spell, finishing with 3/21 from 5 overs, skipper Finn Tolland took 2/18 from 5 overs, Gavin Reynolds took 2/15 from 4 overs, with single wickets to Ollie Delaney and Bradey Fratantaro. A good team batting effort from Pomborneit saw them comfortably run down West Warrion’s score, finishing on 4/202 from their 30 overs. Openers Noah Riches (31 retired from 30 balls) and Finn Tolland (27 retired from 30 balls) got the innings off to a great start, Bradey Fratantaro scored 18, Ben Whytcross with 30 retired from 30 balls and Gavin Reynolds with 35 from 20 balls kept the score ticking along. These efforts enabled the Bulls to top 200 for the second time this season in the Under 17 competition.

On Sunday in the Under 16’s, Bookaar batted first at Frederick St Oval, making 4/186. Noah Riches with 1/24 from 6 overs and Fletcher Tolland with 1/17 from 5 overs were impressive, Finn Huggins was the other wicket taker. In reply the Bulls were dismissed for 111, Fletcher Tolland batting well for 29 from 36 balls, Josh Reynolds making an unbeaten 18 and Levi Cootesmith 13.
