Earlier this week we published Episode 25 of Dave Goodwin’s engaging series ‘Diamond in the Dust Heap’, nominating it as the penultimate episode ahead of a final instalment today. Episode 26, titled ‘The Writing Game’, has as its focus the newspaper writers of the 1920s and 30s, and their contribution to the colour, context and communication of ‘the sweet science’ to their audience.
Now there’s been a late change of plan.
Herb Barkle’s story is just one example of the impact of gifted writers on the public’s understanding and appreciation of the sport. It becomes a part of the literature of boxing which, when further investigated, reveals a rich, international library of commentary across a broad range of styles and purposes.
Consequently, Dave Goodwin is keen to dig deeper into that literature and is working on an expanded version of Episode 26 to be published at a later, as yet unconfirmed, date. It promises to be worth the wait!
For now, revisit or, if you’re new to this series, acquaint yourself with the Herb Barkle story by following all of the episodes HERE.
