A quality day at the Derby

by Mark “Makybe” Freeman

Just a pleasure seeing the quality go around today, punters. How good is Typhoon Tracy? Sat three-wide early, but ran away with such authority. Managed to keep out of Hot Danish, having seen her soundly thrashed by Tracy at Caulfield.

And Faint Perfume is also proving a gun. She was nice odds for one of Bart’s given her fast closing effort in the fillies distance race on Caulfield Cup day. The Coolmore was a pulsating finish, with King Pulse pretty impressive at his third start.

Shocking has now put himself among the chances for Tuesday, but Viewed’s trial was spot on. Master O’Reilly ran home solidly, but tracking him all the way to the line, even gaining a half length in the last 200, was mad Sydney stayer Newport.

Not too bad a day on the punt, thin slice of the quaddie that most punters would have had a section of, and some running and daily doubles kept us in the game. Same can’t be said for Daff’s cash.

The disappointments were Rockferry, the sense of timing we all thought was right on was out by a fair whack. First Command was flat in the Salinger, in which our boy Secret Flyer had every chance, getting onto the back of Eagle Falls but left in that horse’s wake. Probably not up to level of these in the end.

So Daff we’re back to square now, we’ve run through our All Silent’s stash, so you’ll have to dip into the bank to fund a nice big Melbourne Cup trifecta.

See you Monday in the build up.

Couldn’t make too much happen all day really. The quaddies broke even. I actually backed Typhoon Tracy. Had Viewed straight out. Irazu each way. Followed the Secret Flyer tip with a few dollars on him, but won on that race anyway by laying a few others – including the favourite.

My big chance was Royal Ida who loomed (carrying my $30 at odds of $34). I didn’t see the race as I was taking Theo over to see the chooks and collect the eggs at Manning Clark House. Greg Miles called Royal Ida like the winner. Dead-heat third. No each way for me.

    Won $49 on the day.

  2. With apologies to Haiku Bob:

    Two bets

    Faint Perfume

    Wallet fills
    Smiles grow
Am I the master of the universe?
