WAFL Round 4: Royals and Swans get a win

WAFL round four…

The WAFL season has tightened… everyone has a win.

East Perth won the WAFL-AFL-alignment-club-mini-derby at Rushton Park and earned the Royals their first premiership points of the season. It was tight early but East Perth were a bit stronger than Peel around the ball with Patrick McGinnity and Craig Wulff both back to their best. Corey Adamson and Matthew Allen each kicked three goals.

Hayden Crozier was Peel’s best player and kicked three goals as did Matt Taberner. Youngster Calvin Thorne again impressed.

Peel Thunder 11.8 (74) v East Perth 15.14 (104)

It’s starting to look a bit ominous for West Perth – on Saturday they were never in the game at East Fremantle Oval and went down by 50 points. Jack Perham impressed for the Sharks along with midfielders Cameron Eardley and Liam Anthony while Brett Peake kicked three goals.

Steven Browne was good for the Falcons along with Luke Meadows.

East Fremantle 14.17 (101) West Perth 7.9 (51)

The statistically minded would like to observe that Subiaco and Perth each scored 23 times at Leederville Oval on Sunday. The Lions won by 50 points. Hamish Shepheard has been around a while as a junior star, East Perth player and Fremantle rookie. He’s now with Subiaco and this five-goal effort was probably his best in senior footy. Big man Lachlan Delahunty and big namer Bill Fetherstonhaugh also had good games.

Aidan Tropiano showed some of his Sandover form for the Demons and the reliable Brett Latch did his job.

Subiaco 14.9 (93) Perth 4.19 (43)

Some were wondering whether the hard-hit Swan Districts would win at all this year and when they trailed Claremont 1.0 (6) to 4.8 (32) at quarter time a win looked far away. But Swans have spirit and led by newcomer former Royal Freddie Clutterbuck, heart and soul Swan Tallan Ames and talented forward Ricky Cary (three goals) they got up in a thriller.

Ian Richardson kicked three goals for the Tigers, who were playing a “home” game at Bassendean due to the Showgrounds being unavailable. That’s twice in a row the Tigers have begun like express trains and finished like freeway commuters.
