WAFL Round 14 – Two out two in again

In another interesting round in the WAFL, Claremont and South Fremantle have jumped back into the top five at the expense of East Perth and Swan Districts. Meanwhile West Perth spiced up the competition even further by beating top team Subiaco.

East Fremantle kicked their first goal late in the third quarter at home against Claremont and didn’t do much else to emphasise that there’s trouble at Moss Street. The Tigers jumped back into the five with Corrie Yeo, Keifer Yu and Matt Davies impressing and Beau Maister kicking three goals. Mark McGough was the best of the Sharks – he has now retired.

Claremont?14.9 (93) East Fremantle 3.7?(25)

A seven-goal third quarter broke the game for Peel at Rushton Park against a plucky Perth. Tendai Mzungu was everywhere for the Thunder, Matt Taberner and Max Duffy each kicked four goals, Josh Ballard was strong in the midfield and Zac Clarke may have done enough to earn back his place in the Fremantle team. Aidan Tropiano and Liam McKenna again did their bit for the Demons and Brent Latch also played strongly. Coach Earl Spalding joked at the start of the year that his team might make finals if a top eight was introduced – Perth remain a mathematical chance to make the eight.

Peel Thunder 17.16 (118) v Perth 8.8 (56)

The thriller was at Fremantle Oval where, in front of celebrating 1970 and 1980 premiership players, the Bulldogs dominated all day but then fell over the line by two points against Swan Districts. Ryan Cook was in brilliant touch for the winners, Kyle Hams and Ashton Hams used the ball expertly, Tim Kelly was back to his best and Haiden Schloithe kicked four goals. Tony Notte and Todd Banfield were the best for Swans and Matthew Jukes kicked three goals.

South Fremantle 12.10 (82) Swan Districts 12.8?(80)

It’s always been a long way to Joondalup and this year it’s turned into horror trip for visitors. This time Subiaco were the victims suffering just their second loss of the year. Chris Keunen was in charge in the ruck for the Falcons, Marcus Adams continued his imposing form in defence and Andrew Strijk, Matt Guadagnin and Nic Rodda also played important roles. Leigh Kitchin had another good game for the Lions, Kyal Horsley was powerful in the midfield and Michael Wood had his best game for the year. A crowd of over 7,000 turned up West Perth’s well publicised international round.

West Perth 8.7 (55) v Subiaco 5.15 (45)

The ladder: Subiaco 40; West Perth 32; Peel 28; South Fremantle 28; Swan Districts 24; East Perth 24; Claremont 24; East Fremantle 20; Perth 4.

Great win for my lot on Saturday. Wish I could’ve been up there in South Geraldton for that one. Great crowd too if it isn’t doctored like many crowd numbers are.

A bye and then Perth at Lathlain for us before we take on the Swans at Basso in a huge game.
