Syd Jackson was a pioneering indigenous player in the VFL / AFL. He played 104 games for East Perth from 1963, only missing a Sandover Medal in his first season due to being suspended. He was targeted by Ron Barrassi, and recruited to Carlton in 1968.
Syd had to sit out his first year at Carlton in 1968 due to transfer issues, & was just the runner in the Grand Final win. He went on to play 8 seasons and 136 games for Carlton, winning 2 premierships. He was a clever & dangerous half forward with brilliant ball handling & kicking skills, and was one of the very few indigenous players in that era.
Syd was one of “The Stolen Generation”, being taken from his parents when he was 3 years old, from the Northern Gold Fields of WA. He was separated from his parents & 2 sisters, briefly adopted by a white family, but then sent 980km south to Roelands Native Mission near Bunbury, where he lived until the age of 15; an extraordinary life story.
Syd played a special role in this week’s indigenous round at Carlton. He was a close teammate of Percy for his time at Carlton and he should make for a very interesting guest the Friday.
