Ricky Nixon (3 April 1963 – birthday 2 days before our lunch) was a promising junior footballer in the Bendigo League. He & team-mate Greg Williams played Teal Cup and were both invited to try out with Carlton. Ricky was retained, not Greg. Ricky went on to play 63 games for Carlton, St Kilda and Hawthorn.

Ricky was also a PE instructor at Carey Grammar but he went on to start a pioneering sports management business which enabled the development of the Club 10 concept for the marketing of elite players. Some of his clients included Gary Ablett snr, Wayne Carey, Jason Dunstall, Tony Lockett, Gary Lyon, Matthew Richardson, Ben Cousins, Michael Voss, James Hird & Nick Riewoldt.

He became one of the most influential people in AFL football. In 2010 he published “It’s a Jungle Out There – The Inside Story of Managing & Marketing the Game’s Biggest Superstars”. Soon after, Ricky became embroiled in controversy, his business crumbled and he was suspended by the AFL. He became fodder for tabloid newspapers and trash journalism.

In 2015 he wrote a second book “My Side”, but had to go to court to overcome objections to its publishing.
