Robert Shaw is a former Essendon footballer and AFL coach. He was born in 1955 in Hobart. He has a Masters Degree in Sports Management and an Applied Science Degree in PE.
He played just 51 games for Essendon between 1974 and 1982 in a career plagued by injury. He also played six games for Tasmania in 1979-80. In 1984, he captain-coached Clarence FC in the Tasmanian League to a premiership and then runners-up in the following year. He then returned to Essendon as assistant coach in 1986.
Robert moved to Fitzroy as assistant coach in 1989, winning the Reserves premiership that year. He became senior coach for three years from 1991, performing relatively well with an undermanned side during Fitzroy’s difficult financial times. He then coached the Adelaide Crows for two years before becoming Football Operations Manager at Fremantle. He returned to Victoria in 2009 and taught at Brighton Grammar for ten years, which included three APS premierships. He currently works for Essendon as Schools Recruiting Consultant.
In total, he was a Senior Coach for 150 games and an assistant at Essendon for 11 years. He was State of Origin coach when Tasmania beat Victoria in 1990. He is in the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame and is Assistant Coach in the Tasmanian Team of the Century.
