The 2020 ‘Onya Liz’ Cup – Round 12

Greetings Tipsters

Ah, the bye rounds, when Melbourne footballers say ”Hey Coach, this niggling knee injury I’ve got, well, I heard about a bloke in Cairns who’s great at dealing with it, so how about I take a week up there and sort it out?”

Brisbane, fifth. Scoring hasn’t been a problem. Hipwood has come of age, directing the ball through centre half-forward and kicking 28 goals. The team has conceded some big scores against better teams, won big the last three weeks against worse and finding a groove which ought serve them well over the next few months.

Essendon, eighteenth. God only knows how Woosha is still there, esp after Rounds 7 & 8, combined 34 goals to 11. That aside, Bombers has been competitive, five losses within three goals and a few crucial moments. Word is, the Pharmacist is gonna coach in Perth next week, take/deflect the heat, or 6/1 says bask in the glory, then go public Tuesmorn, hand the controls over to Rutten in the midst of the Ploesi raid.

Geelong, sixth. They did look ordinary early on, even got beat by Freo. But have won five straight since, incl Lions & Tigers, in a solid run of good form. Ablett, Hawkins, Jenkins make for a great forward setup, the kids are giving the old blokes a rest from the hard work in the packs, at long last. Looking a bit like a flag contender.

Port Adelaide, thirteenth. Gee, started brightly, then fell in a heap, being outmuscled or outrun for four weeks, beat Carlton, then gave up. Kicked 36 goals in last four weeks, Hinkley would have been gone if not for Kochie’s personal and professional travails that have distracted him these last several weeks. Russ Wright, Stop Privatisation Of Footy Productions’ Adelaide agent, bumped into Ken in a beachside pub, he had grilled fish and salad for lunch with a local semignon and, before taking a taxi home, said “I wish David could get his shit together and sack me. Got my eye on a place in Warnambool.”

St Kilda, seventh. Crikey, Barker’s Boys won seven of the last eight! No, I didn’t notice either. Beat both Cats and Monaros. Took a few weeks to get their act together but since then (names) have been playing w style and grunt, X has kicked 31, blokes are playing with confidence and clearly enjoying themselves.

West Coast, second. Exploded out of the blocks, 45 goals to 25 in the first three rounds. By May, looking a little less sharp and the goals drying up, 58 to 60 in the last five. Coincidentally or not, since Kelly did his calf. Bombers next week is an opportunity to make a statement but the nature of that loss to Magpies ought be a concern.

Crows hosted Dogs and really put it together, been working toward this for a few weeks. A good win at home against a good team. Adelaide 15.11.101, Footscray 11.13.79.

Swans players drove from Clovelly to SCG to meet Wharfies, two teams that try to choke the life out of the opposition. Swan have the better forward line, Heeney kicked three. Sydney 13.15.93, Fremantle 9.14.68.

Hometown bullies! Schoolies got stuck into the alcopops, went hard and crazy. Two reports is worth it for a mighty win. Gold Coast 16.11.107, Hawthorn 10.8.68.

Not an especially Marvellous match, Monaros were tripping over their shoelaces. Twelve minute bursts of brilliance in the second and fourth got ‘em over the line. Blues were, y’know, hardworking, competent, worthy, etc. GWS 12.17.89, Carlton 10.11.71.

Shinboners hard grind was working for a while there but teams like Tigers can get through it. Maybe Rhyce has a flashy plan set to debut after the break. Richmond 15.14.104, North Melbourne 10.10.70.

The newly-confident Deez met the hard-nosed Magpies. What a cracker of a match! Fuschias surged, 4&20s clawed back. Every term. Bar the last. Gawn v Grundy. Viney and Brayshaw v Pendlebury and Treloar. Exposed the weakness of Magpies lack of a good big forward. Ironic that Weideman would kick four on Moore, who played for three backmen, don’t knock him. Melbourne 17.12.114, Collingwood 11.8.76.

Cheers Tipsters
