Strange Game in a Strange Land

The Catholic has the Vatican,
the Jew, the synagogue,
the Buddhist has the temple,
the Aztec lauds the dog,

every culture looks towards
a supernatural force,
Australians have their footy fields…
oval shaped of course.

While conquered nations play the games
their captors make them play,
‘Let us play a different game,’
those quaint Australians say.

And watch them play their different game
on quagmire, grass or sand,
from orchards of the Apple Isle
to cliffs of Arnhem Land.

  1. A bloody ripper DB, and joyous. What could you be so happy about I wonder? Cheers

  2. Luke Reynolds says

    Absolutely brilliant Damian. Go Pies!

  3. You’ve captured a lot here, Damo.

  4. Phillip Dimitriadis says

Tom Wills would be proud of this one, DB. Great catching up last night. Enjoy the rest of the week and Go Pies !!

  5. Cheers Rick, Smokie and Luke (will be in Q57 on Sat if you’re close by Luke) and likewise Phil – great to catch up and discuss Pies misery, 80s fashion, Larry David and WWF heyday. Here’s that Andre the Giant documentary before I forget – surely the greatest Wrestling doco ever (which, of course, means it’s the greatest doco ever!).

  6. Packed a fair view punches into those verses Bala.

    Strange days indeed.
