Almanac Teams: Arrivals and Departures (St Kilda)

This year for football teams I have gone back to a theme. A team of Arrivals and Departures at each club. I hope the teams go down well.

The criteria for each team

  • Based each team of players from 1980 onwards;
  • Have tried to put a player in from each of the remaining 18 teams, including Fitzroy on most occasions;
  • Have tried to be as balanced as possible, though the interchange regardless of balance will be next best four players;
  • The player is based on from previous club and to immediate next club;
  • Stats are based on the club and for arrivals, the immediate club before and for departures, the immediate club after;
  • The Arrivals team is based on the performance at the club, while Departures is based on the performance at their new club.

If I’ve missed anyone, please advise, and please enjoy.

The highlights of the team are: St Kilda have the most players to arrive so far with their 163 beating Richmond’s 129. St Kilda have received the most players from Carlton and Hawthorn especially in the 1980s and early 1990s where they tried to recruit players at the end of their careers to help with young sides by bringing in leadership and successful culture. They have sent four very good players to Hawthorn in Russell Greene, Joel Smith, Brent Guerra, and Ben McEvoy.

In the arrivals team there are eight premiership players (from other teams) and 15 more listed below in the others. In the departures team there are nine premiership players in the team with one more in the others.

  1. Ian Wilson says

    An incredible compilation Rodney and as a Saints tragic quite triggering! Maybe Big Boy Mcevoy is the only one I would add but I probably missed it. What you have done here is highlight the continual rotating door of players throughout our club and the mismanagement of the lists over the years. Surely no other club has had as many inconsistencies and poor decision making. Our fish has a giant head that continues to rot. Thanks for putting this together. Cheers

  2. Great research! As another St Kilda supporter, it’s hard to believe that St Kilda has the most players from other league clubs, from the period in question. I realise that it’s mainly from the 1980s and early 1990s, as mentioned. It’s just that unfortunately in today’s era, St Kilda has not been a destination club for star players, not that it’s ever been!

    Personally, I would put Aaron Hamill on the half forward flank of the Arrivals team, and demote Mason Wood to the interchange bench. Although he had a bad run of injuries towards the end of his career at St Kilda, Hamill played many great games for St Kilda, and his physical presence on the field, was invaluable for the Saints.

    Also, from what Tim Membrey has achieved at St Kilda with his goal kicking, I would put him on the half forward flank, demoting Rod Keogh to the interchange bench.

    I also think that Steven King should be in the 1st ruck for St Kilda, as he was a good ruckman for St Kilda in 2009 and 2010, when they were runners up. Hickey was dropped a number of times towards the end of his career with St Kilda, so I would demote Hickey to the interchange bench and Adam Schneider can go to the forward pocket. There will still be enough talls in the forward half with the likes of Membrey, Crow and Gehrig.

    I would make Ross Lyon the coach of the Arrivals, for what he did in getting Fremantle to a Grand Final in 2013.

    As for the Departures team, I would replace Sziller with Guerra in the back pocket, because Guerra played well for Hawthorn in a premiership team in 2008, in that position. I would also have Joel Smith ahead of Ben Long on the half forward flank because I believe Joel Smith was a better goal kicker for Hawthorn than Ben Long at the Gold Coast. For team balance, I would also have Luke Ball ahead of Josh Bruce in the forward pocket, as there are still enough talls in the forward line with Locket, Hall and Tom Lynch. For team balance, I would also have Perovic at centre half back and Daryl Wakelin at full back. Perovic played in a premiership team with Carlton, which is why I would have Shanahan demoted to the interchange bench, along with Long, Sziller and Bruce.

    The dual coaches of The Departures should be Allan Jeans and Michael Malthouse.

    I would like to see a match between the St Kilda Arrivals against the St Kilda Departures.
    The venue would be Moorabbin, in front of the animal enclosure.
    Transport would be by plane at Moorabbin Airport, for both The Arrivals and The Departures.
    Entertainment would be provided by highlights of St Kilda’s runner up seasons in 1997, 2009 and the drawn Grand Final in 2010 because 1966 is before 1980, as are St Kilda’s other runners up seasons in 1913, 1965 and 1971.

    I think The Departures will win the game easily because of much better overall talent. However, let’s hope for a good game of football, with plenty of entertainment for the St Kilda crowd.

    Whatever happens, at least The Saints Will Go Marching In!

  3. Just another thing that I overlooked. I know you mentioned Ben McEvoy, towards the beginning of this article. However, as good a player as Rhys Stanley has been at Geelong, including the 2020 flag, like Ian, I would put Ben McEvoy in the 1st ruck of The Departures team and drop Stanley altogether from that team. Josh Bruce is more versatile and could pinch hit in the ruck or be a fill-in for the forward or back line, coming off the interchange bench.

    Also, Ben McEvoy played in 2 premiership teams for Hawthorn in 2013 and 2014 and Rhys Stanley has been dropped a few times for Geelong over the last few years.

  4. Cheers Ian & Anon
    Big Boy deserved to be in there, I had a few ex Hawks so mixed them up a bit.
    Your changes make sense Anon but I wanted to stick to my criteria of one per side in starting 18.

    Feel your pain but as a Tigers supporter who waited 37 years all I can say it us worth the wait. For all Saints supporters I truly hope like Swans, Cats, Bulldogs, Tigers & Demons you break your drought. Every long suffering supporter deserves to see their team win

  5. I don’t think I saw his name typed anywhere for Arrivals. Brian Wilson, the 1982 Brownlow Medalist for Melbourne, played 154 games for Melbourne from 1982-1990. He then went to St Kilda in 1991 and played 7 games. Prior to Melbourne, he played 39 games for North Melbourne from 1980-81 and 9 games for Footscray in 1978-79.

  6. Just one niggly point Rodney. I get that the Departures side is based on their performance at the new club but really has Ben Long ( who I really rate and miss by the way) in his two years in and out of the seniors really better than Nicky Winmar’s year at the Bulldogs? I mean , Ben was still Ben Long but Nicky was still The Great Nicky Winmar.!

  7. Staggering amount of ex blues have ended up at the saints – well played as always-Rodney

  8. Thanks Anon missing Brian Wilson was an oversight

    Thanks Timsy Ben Long gets in as needed a player from each club, Winmar missed out really to Josh Bruce in the side.

    Thanks Rulebook Saints loved their old Carlton players in late 80’s, some still had some good footy still in them.

  9. Another interesting observation for me was the high number of St Kilda players in the Dapartures team of 23, who ended up playing in a premiership team, a few of them more than 1 flag, with the club they next ended up at. These were Daryl Wakelin (PA), Jamie Cripps (WC), Barry Hall (Syd), Rhys Stanley (Geel), Russell Greene (Haw), Luke Ball (Coll), Brent Guerra (Haw), Val Perovic (Carl), Dean Rice (Carl) and from outside the 23, Ben McEvoy (Haw).

    I believe all those players were better footballers at their new clubs. Michael Malthouse missed the cut off, as he left St Kilda in 1976 and played in a flag for Richmond in 1980. The one that’s hurt the most for St Kilda not Richmond supporters, although it was way before 1980, was Ian Stewart leaving Richmond at the start of 1971, and playing in a flag for Richmond in 1973. Most likely, cost St Kilda winning the 1971 flag, when they had Hawthorn on toast by 20 points at three quarter time.

    Melbourne might have had the curse of Norm Smith before breaking their flag drought in 2021. St Kilda has had the curse of Ian Stewart leaving but even more importantly, the curse of the zoning laws being changed after their 1966 flag, due to opposition clubs complaining about St Kilda’s then zone. Of course, Hawthorn (36 years to win their 1st flag in 1961) ended up with St Kilda’s strong zone and amassed many flags with several players from that zone. The rest, as they say, is history. It was 1 flag all in the 1971 Grand Final at three quarter time and it’s now Hawthorn 13 flags and possibly counting, to St Kilda’s 1 flag. Is St Kilda the most jinxed club? Yes, in my opinion.

    Is this a record number of players from all the 19 teams, who played for a flag at their next club, including Fitzroy as the 19th team? Perhaps, one day a combined best team of players who departed one club to play in a premiership for their next club can be made. Also, Lappin (Carl), Lockett (Syd) and Shane Wakelin (Coll) played in Grand Finals for those teams, as runners up.

    As far as the Arrivals team is concerned, Nathan Brown (Coll), Sean Dempster (Syd), Russell Morris (Haw), Brad Hill (Haw/Frem, flags with Haw not Frem), Dan Butler (Rich), Steven King (Geel), Ken Sheldon (Carl), Adam Schneider (Syd) and Dean Anderson (Haw) played in flags for their previous teams. Although Brad Hill didn’t play in a premiership for Fremantle, before arriving at St Kilda, taking into account all the Carlton Arrivals not in the team of 23, is this a record out of all the 19 teams, including Fitzroy, for players arriving at a club, having played in a flag at their previous club? I also believe only half those players, at best, played better football at St Kilda than their previous clubs. Furthermore, as far as all the Carton Arrivals were concerned, apart from Sheldon and Hamill later on, the majority were well past their best and played far better football for Carlton than St Kilda, due to their age and the wear and tear on their bodies.

    Perhaps one day a similar combined best Arrivals team can be done as well, for players who played in a premiership for their previous club, before arriving at their next club.
