Round 9 – St Kilda v Geelong: Kicking woes cost the game

Friday 14 May 2021

Marvel Stadium, Docklands

St Kilda put much pressure on Geelong. Laid good tackles, made turnovers, controlled footy much, found space and delivered footy accurately.

Saints inaccurate goal kicking both by set shots and running in cost the game. We should have won the big match.

Why did forwards waste the great and big efforts demonstrated in the defensive line and midfield? Probably they focused on putting much pressure in order to gain more scoring opportunities, and then less energy and concentration were put on goal kickings?

I am not criticising my boys. They played well. Just they need to improve goal kicking. Also they need to take balance.

What made me sad during and after the game was bagging Max King on the social media. Even I have seen a comment that he didn’t deserve to wear the legend St Nick’s number twelve. Ridiculous!

And worsening, some people defend themselves by calling their actions as giving criticism.

Max is only 20 years old. He is young. When I was his age, I got criticism much rather than compliments. I was rejected by younger girls at a joint club established by my university and nearby women’s college. I lost self-esteem while I believe now that I should have enjoyed my life. I wasted my precious youth.

I don’t want the young forward to go through such a terrible life path. Such fans need to think if they were criticised like Max.

He showed his emotions on the bench at last quarter. As I also need to improve kicking accuracy, I feel his pain and want him to answer on the field on Saturday against the Bulldogs. I believe in young Max as he has good skills and is talented.

Good news is that his old coach and Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd comments positively on his 3AW program. Please take a note from your former coach and practise more. And I would like Jarrad Roughead to mentor him.

And Dwayne Russell talked about accuracy in goal kicking on SEN’s afternoon show on Wednesday. He thinks players need to kick more even after team training. That’s why I do every day unless raining.

On Thursday, I struggled with kicking accurately in the direct in front situations at my own footy drills. Rhythm and punting are important in goal kicking, I find and have to remind myself all the time. Also Brett Ratten comments on criticism placed on King. He backs the young forward well.

Saints played well apart from goal kicking, so I hope we beat the second placed Bulldogs on Saturday night at the same venue.

Go Saints!
