Round 20 – Richmond v Collingwood: Floreat Pica Society match report

Pies v Tigers 27/7/2025

Oh, the fickle finger of fate!

Preamble

Travelling the Gibb River Rd (WA), to meet our designated arrival time for the start of our game.  Tyre blowout!!  1 hour later back on the road for destination Ellenbrae Station.   Not going to make game start but shouldn’t be too late. Here we go…. now Elon has failed me!  Can’t log into Starlink in remote outback, East Kimberley ranges.  Fallback – should be able to watch at Ellenbrae Station Reception area – nope, no TV!  Aaargh!!

On a personal note, I have a lot of family history when it comes to the Tigers.  All the boys were  ‘Woodsmen’, all the girls were Tigers.  So there was always plenty of interest in our meet-ups.  They’ve had some pretty good sides over the years, so have we, but I feel like they’ve had all the finals luck.

What am I looking for today?

Our forward line to continue their tackling pressure.

Our back line to return to the days of Murph.

Our centre line has been well below its best.  Cameron seems to struggle against Nank.  When the ball gets out of the forward line, we seem to be getting overlapped much easier than usual and putting enormous pressure on our depleted back line.

I want to see more forward attacks to space to allow our goal kickers to run to it rather than long bombs to packs.

Go Pies!!

Lacklustre

Cold wet day at the ‘G’

Due to my current situation and my wish to promote all styles of writing, unlike my usual self, I’m going to make this short and sweet.

1st Quarter

Started well with a Membrey goal then Checkers ‘monger’ goal.  Not a lot of other highlights except for Naicos getting leather poisoning again, Eddie Allen getting 9 disposals and good tackle count, 1 missed goal, and McStay’s half volley pickup in the conditions was perfection.

General play – Collingwood controlling Richmond but not getting away.

Quarter time score – Collingwood 3.3, Richmond 2.1

2nd quarter

Horrendous umpiring decision against Perryman.  No free kick allowed.

Daicos still controlling the game – Goaled.  Pies forward line being well controlled by Balta and Vlaustin.  Almost went to sleep watching this quarter despite Collingwood kicking 4 goals to Richmond’s 2.

2nd Quarter time score  – Collingwood 7.6, Richmond 4.4

Feels like Collingwood will now take them apart.

3rd Quarter

Tiges strike first – another centre clearance lost

Houston tempted fate with a deliberate and risky OOB.  Fortunately not paid.

Maynard shanks one out on the full.

Cameron (full forward), pushed out by Balta, no FREE!  Tiges goal from the rebound.  Umpires are killing us.  Scores back to Collingwood 48 v 40.

Long pass to Membrey from a free in the centre; Membrey  goals!!  Scores  54-40. Pies still up.

Messy buildup to Membrey 45meters out, 30 degree angle.  Missed for one behind.  I think I heard the commentator say “it’s his first behind from 11 consecutive goals”.  He’s been very good for us.

‘Push in the back’ no longer exists.  Sullivan was taken out clearly. Schultz chance, rushed behind.  Better pressure from both sides.

Crisp to Naicos to Hyphen – GOALS!

Score 63-40. Pies still up.

Houston applies trademark tackle.

‘No fifteen’ called against Pies after a kick out of the middle landed in Pies hands 20 metres away.  Naicos makes them pay.

Score 69-40.

Houston getting more involved.  Houston again – Long kicks off the ground, Schultzy goals. 76-40

Hysterical moment after Sidey tackles McIntosh, he gently removes his head band and puts it on the ground beside him. Sidey’s chuckling  as he runs off and McIntosh gets up smiling and putting the head band on – excellent entertainment.

Great work by Membrey in tight, culminates with an Elliott goal.  Scores 82-41

Pies quickly return it to our 50 but then the ball rebounds too easily and culminates with a Tigers goal– melodramatic.

4th Quarter

Chance missed by Mihocek , Moore beaten by Balta – again.

Balta misses.  Scores 83-48

Great defensive mark by Q.  Multiple possession play ends in goal to Houston. Scores 89-48

Free kick paid against Sidey – who never had possession and was held!  Umpires still killing us.

Billy should have received a 50 penalty as his opponent kept chasing him at least 20  metres after he marked.  Membrey misses a relatively easy one.

Mansell sticks his head up but misses, fortunately.  Scores  91-55

Pies have gone to sleep – not happy; lots of dropped marks.

Horrible last quarter topped off by Schultzy with a poster from 25m out.

3min 40 to go. Ring the bell!

Final scores 13.15 (93) Collingwood  8.9 (57) Richmond

Moore is lost without Howe and Murphy.

It was one of those games where there was never any fear of losing but we had too many passengers for mine. I would have loved to see a 100 pt victory to cement Top pozzie against the marauding (or is that Murdering?) Crows and Fagan’s Fitzroy who I see as the current main challengers.

Horsborough Results

I’m unsure whether we’ve entered the blackout period for Horsborough scores so I’ll give a general statement about our best players on the day until I hear otherwise.

Best players came from Mitchell, Sidebottom, Long, Naicos, Jaicos, Houston, Membrey, Perriman. Cameos for the rest.

Go Woodsmen. Floreat Pica. Rub (Well, sort of short and sweet)
