Round 2 – Predictions: Anomalies, or true to form?

Round 2 Selections.

A lousy three winners selected in Round 1 in the Almanac footy tipping comp! Such a rotten start tipping wise to the footy season, and it can be hard to redeem oneself, even this early in the season. But there must be many  others in the same boat. So a lot more thought needs to go into my tipping this week.

Richmond v Collingwood should be a cracking game. The Pies will be desperate after letting the game against the Cats slip away from them when it was within their grasp. Richmond played well when they had to against the Blues and can’t afford to play in patches like that against the Pies. Of course Alex Rance will be sorely missed. Big shoes to be filled there! I have a sneaking suspicion the Pies will get up and win this one. After last week I’ll probably be wrong!

Sydney and Adelaide both had disappointing games. I believe age is beginning to catch up with their play makers. Some of their up and comers just haven’t quite grabbed the coat by the collar. They seem to wait for others to make a move rather take the initiative themselves. However, up in Sydney you would expect the Swans to redeem themselves.

My Bombers take on St Kilda, and what can one say about Essendon’s dismal performance against GWS, it was pathetic. They looked sluggish, slow to the ball, fumbled, and just could not find any space. Saints just got over the line against the Suns and they will be confident against the Dons. But, I’m going to stick with my boys, surely they cannot play as badly as that two week’s in a row! Dons to win.

Port Adelaide made short work of Melbourne last week so at home against Carlton you would expect them to win comfortably.

Geelong will be brimming with confidence after their stoic victory against the Pies last round and should account for a disappointing Melbourne. I think  the Dees are thinking too far ahead of themselves and are taking too much notice of all the hype around them. I can’t see them beating Geelong down at Kardinia Park.

The Eagles at home will unfurl their 2018 Premiership Flag and should have wiped the pitiful performance against the Lions out of their minds by then. Perhaps a premiership hangover? The Eagles will be pleased last week’s game was in Brisbane saving their fans the embarrassment of watching such an inept performance at home. Hopefully that is out of their system as they come up against a very impressive GWS unit. This is a flip of the coin, or rock, scissor, paper decider to select a winner. Heads! GWS to win.

Brisbane will hope to continue their form from last week and the Roos need to play far better if they expect to win. I’ll stay with Brisbane.

Hawthorn and Western Bulldogs should be another cracker of game. Both had very encouraging victories last round and will be looking to repeat the result. I think the Bulldogs may have rediscovered their mojo from a few years ago, and if this is the case I expect them to get over the line once again in another close game.

Fremantle had an excellent win first up and I would expect them to overcome the Suns without too many problems.

So, I’ve made my selections for Round 2, a round that may start to sort the chaff from  the straw, or will it be another topsy-turvy round like we had last week?

That’s the beauty of footy; it can be so unpredictable!

  1. Col, certainly a devil of a task to be confident in one’s choices. Maybe this will be the Year of the Kiss of Death in the tipping competition. My ‘outside the bubble’ picks are
    Port Adelaide
    West Coast
    North Melbourne
    and in the AFLW, Adelaide.
