As this week and next week (Rounds 10 and 11) are part of the Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round, it got me thinking of doing a football team where each player on the field has either a Round of matches or a particular game in either their or their relative’s honour, medals, awards, trophies and cups either named after them or someone else with the same surname. In the latter case, Barry Davis has the Davis Cup in tennis and Paddy Ryder has the Ryder Cup in golf, but not named after them.
Maddie’s Match won’t appear after 2025 and The Michael Tuck Medal no longer exists.
Barry Round was included, so that every AFL Round could have significance.
Some players were named out of position, so they could be included in the team.
This is the VFL/AFL Award, Cup, Medal, Trophy, Round Team:
B: Gary Ayres (Haw/Gary Ayres Medal), Danny Frawley (St K/Spud’s Game), Allan Jeans (St K 1955-59/Allan Jeans Award)
HB: Barry Davis (Ess/North M/Davis Cup), Ross Glendinning (NM/WC/R Glen Medal), William McClelland (Melb 1898-1904/McClelland Trophy)
C: Allen Aylett (NM/Allen Aylett Medal), Jock McHale (c) (Coll/Jock McHale Medal), Doug Nicholls (Fitz 1932-37/Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round)
HF: Leigh Matthews (Haw/L Mat Trophy), Nick Riewoldt (St K/sister Maddie’s Match), Norm Smith (Melb/Fitz/Norm Smith Medal)
F: Ron Evans (Ess/Ron Evans Medal), John Coleman (Essendon/Coleman Medal), Barry Round (Foots/SM/Syd/Any AFL Round)
R: Jim Stynes (Melb/Jim Stynes Medal), Michael Tuck (Haw/Michael Tuck Medal), Ron Barassi (Melb/Ron Barassi Medal)
Sub: Paddy Ryder (Ess/PA/St K/Ryder Cup)
Captain Coach: Jock McHale (Coll)
Administrator: Charles Brownlow (Brownlow Medal)
This team will play a pretend exhibition match match against the VFL/AFL Indigenous Team of the Century.
Venue: TIO Stadium, formerly Marrara Stadium, Northern Territory.
Entertainment: Yothu Yindi
Let’s hope for a hope for a good game of football, with many award winning performances!
