  1. The time is right for Sheffield Shield players who can perform consistently to stake a claim to a Test spot. There is a spot for an opener, as the selectors would like to move Watson down the order so that he can bowl more. Hughes has a very suspect technique, and could be readily removed for someone who gets regular runs and look competent doing it. Ponting and Hussey will only be around for a season or two, and any sustained form lapse would see them out of the side. The bowling attack is not at all convincing apart from Ryan Harris who has injury problems. Australian Cricket would give anything for a spinner who can offer something different and play well in all sorts of conditions.
