Well the votes are in and here are the top 5 for each category, in order, based on Almanackers’ votes provided:
60/70s
MANIKATO
VAIN
TOBIN BRONZE
DULCIFY
GALILEE
80/90s
KINGSTON TOWN
BETTER LOOSEN UP
MIGHT AND POWER
VO ROGUE
SUPER IMPOSE
2000s
BLACK CAVIAR
MAKYBE DIVA
NORTHERLY
SO YOU THINK
SUNLINE
The “Winning Post” have also come up with their top 15 with only one difference, Strawberry Road in for Super Impose.
The task now is to place the final 15 into a top 5. Given that the official announcement is to be made on TVN next Friday night (during the William Reid Stakes coverage), it would be fairly reasonable to assume that Black Caviar will be crowned as the winner.
Who are your top 5 of the past 50 years?
1 Kingston Town
2 Makybe Diva
3 Black Caviar
4 Manikato
5 Super Impose
I’ll prune the noms…
quinellas from the first and last eras plus The King.
Agree Crio. My order is:
BLACK CAVIAR
KINGSTON TOWN
VAIN
MAKYBE DIVA
MANIKATO
Black Caviar
Kingston Town
Makybe Diva
Vain
and sentimentally Super Impose
(Had to leave out Vain)
So what questions will I get Budge?
In chronological order:
Manikato
Kingston Town
Might and Power
Makybe Diva
Black Caviar
Nothing to do with sentiment Oges. Would be 5 different horses if asked for my favourites.
Perhaps I wasn’t specific enough in defining the order. Not chronological, alphabetical or sentimental order. Just your opinion of the best 5 from best to 5th best.
I was born in ’69, so can’t speak for Vain, Tobin Bronze, and Galilee. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Vain in and Might and Power out from the list I have.
Black Caviar
Kingston Town
Manikato
Makybe Diva
Might and Power
Hard for me to comment on the first era but think this may be the way they go:
Black Caviar
Kingston Town
Makybe Diva
Manikato
Vain
Special mention to Street Ruffian who failed to get nominated.
I’m with you, Ripsnorter. Special mention to Tiny’s Finito. 40 wins from 80 starts.
“You could run a race on top of Ayers Rock, it doesn’t matter. He’d win it.” – Alan Thomas.
The danger, RipSnorter, is we start to second guess on what “they’ll” go….
they will go BC, Diva, King, Man + take your pick
That’s what we are doing crio, are we not? Predicting what ‘they’ will pick. The first four are certainties, in what order I don’t know. BC first I suppose? I have the King and the Man ahead of Makybe Diva because of their longevity.
Agree with Crio’s surmising, I’ll throw in a different fifth choice, along those lines, “what they might do is…”
1. Black Caviar
2. Kingston Town
3. Makybe Diva
4. Manikato
5. So You Think
Sorry Budge- knew I would get one question and the answer is I would have Super Impose 5th and add that as well as being a great horse I also liked the way it could win the big ones (perhaps I shouldnt have used the word sentimental-one day I will tell you why)
That being so I had to leave out Manikato and that was hard
1. Black Caviar
2. Kingston Town
3. Makybe Diva
4. Super Impose
5. Sunline
Would loved to have squeezed in Waikikamukau! He was handy but cost me a bomb!
1. Black Caviar
2. Kingston Town
3. Manikato
4. Makybe Diva
5. Vain
Special mention to personal favourites:
Scillachi & Octagonal.
The Vain, Manikato, Makybe Diva order is probably the toughest part. Think the top 2 pretty much stand out.
1. Kingston Town
2. Makybe Diva
3. Black Caviar
4. Manikato
5, Vain
M y criteria for the selections and the order were:Did they do what other horses couldn’t do
1. When will a horse next win 3 Cox plates plus a zillion other races, probably never
2. 3 Melb Cups plus those amazing wins over the Sydney Autumn carnival, never happen again (also no horse will be so well handicapped again)
3. Just cannot get beaten so so far ahead of all available opposition but hasn’t had a chance to display the toughness of the earlier two as she’s been super well managed to keep the record in tact.
4. A slipper and a diamond at 2 and still winning group 1’s at 6 or 7, I cannot imagine a horse with the 2yo brilliance and the hardiness to still be racing at the top level 4 or 5 years later willbe seen again by any of us.
5. nothing will ever emulate what he did over the spring carnival..ever.
Excellent summation there, Jock. They are all absolute bona fide champions.
1 VAIN
2 KINGSTON TOWN
3 BLACK CAVIAR
4 MANIKATO
5 MAKYBE DIVA
I went for Vain at No 1 if you ever saw him race there simply was no other and you have to remember he only ran as a 2 & 3 year old what could he have done as a mature horse, there is no way Black Caviar would have matched him at the same ages. I have no doubt with better high energy feeds and more precise training methords these days he would have beaten Black Cavia any day up to 1200m and the KING was the best all round racehorse over any distance
Did they do the TVN/Winning Post outcome on Friday night?
I assumed it would have been done on TVN on the night but as I was at the Valley, I don’t know. Anyone able to advise?
OK. thought it might have beeb part of the vaunted build-up.
Winning Post comes out Wednesday this week so I guess it will provide the answers.
Crio,
It looks like this is the list of the top twenty in order from the judges.
Is this the final decision or is the outcome built on peoples votes?
There did not seem to be much press about this coming out.
http://www.racingnetwork.com.au/ThoroughVisioN/50Greatestin50Years/tabid/207/Default.aspx
Pretty sure this is the final decision. There was some prize from TVN for whoever “guessed” who would be number one.
From the Almanac votes above our top 5, in order, are:
BLACK CAVIAR
KINGSTON TOWN
MAKYBE DIVA
MANIKATO
VAIN
1-Manikato
2-Kingston Town
3-Black Caviar
4-Vain
5-Makybe Diva
