Onwards to Victory!
This was written specifically for the Sydney Swans and was published on their website on Friday 1st September. With no footy this weekend and our Elimination Final imminent, I felt a need to try and express what an amazing year we have witnessed from my team. They have certainly defied the odds!

Oh, the Mighty Bloods, what a year this has been,
You’ve experienced it all and copped a bit on the chin.
You’re now ready to fight, to fight to the end,
And take all before you, and to continue your trend.
We simply didn’t believe it at zero and six,
What had gone wrong that we needed to fix?
Our champs were injured and we wanted them back,
Ramps, Tippo, Heens – Paps, Gazza, Macca and Jack.
It took a while, seven weeks to start winning,
The Lions our first, and by now we were singing.
Cheer Cheer became louder the more games that we won,
Until the Hawks crashed our party, and four points became none.
It didn’t matter too much, as our boys were now rolling,
Seven wins in a row had Swans’ fans extolling.
Our game was now back and we put all to the test,
And teams were now fearful of the Bloods at their best.
Then the Hawks broke our run, six lousy points – again,
Oh how we loathe them, those destroyers of men!
What is it about them, those of the brown and gold?
Thank God they’re now out – out there in the cold.
We got back to our best, winning game after game,
Top teams challenged us, but how we put them to shame.
Those fancied ones tried: the Giants, Cats and the Crows,
We beat them all and showed just how far we can go.
We’ve made history this year, conquering all before us,
Now it’s time for new triumphs: four more weeks of success.
One game at a time – a cliche – but so very, very true,
And our boys will make sure they leave nothing to rue.
Essendon at home, then – we hope – a trip to the G,
We’ll travel the country if needed – let’s just wait and see.
And may all teams who face us, be quivering in their boots,
Taking on the Bloods, so supreme in their pursuits.
We’ll stand by our blood brothers – all 22 of our heroes,
While they give their all, fighting to the end to impose.
They will never give in – they are Bloods to the core,
And we’ll be cheering our champions, wanting more and more.
Can we make it through to that last Saturday in September?
Can we make this year a Proudly Sydney year to remember?
Our aims will be simple and never contradictory,
Until we’re rejoicing as one, singing Onwards to Victory!
Carn the Mighty Bloods!
