Ode to Adam Goodes

Hail Adam Goodes, let’s say it loud and clear,
We salute you Goodsey, with a proud Cheer Cheer.
You have given your all, through thick and thin,
And now you’ve retired, we are left in a spin!

Gone are the days when Bloods old and new
Only wished, in their dreams, to play just like you.
Your talents were heralded and you were seen as the one
Who would lead us to victory, and that you have done.

Gone are the days when Bloods old and new
Could marvel at your skills, seen rarely by so few.
You exceeded all expectations, to become the best in the land,
And you continued to inspire the Blood brothers – hand in hand.

You rewarded us in ’05 and we all cried with you in ’06,
We marvelled at your athleticism, your talent and your tricks.
Your devotion to our team drove you to heights unsurpassed,
And six years later, the Flag flew high from the mast.

Sixteen years you have given, three hundred and seventy two games,
Blood, sweat and tears are indeed synonymous with your name.
You’ve endured more this past year than most men could endure,
And you’ve stood tall and shown what you’re made of – that is for sure!

We will miss you Adam Goodes, our dearly-loved Swan,
It will not be the same, as we bid you anon.
You have inspired us all, in everything you’ve done,
And we stand to cheer you, red and white, as one.

Hail Adam Goodes we say. Stand and proclaim it, loud and clear,
You’re forever our champion, our man to Cheer Cheer.
May you be blessed with joy, and forever fly high,
And continue, Adam, to shake down the thunder from the sky!

  1. Adam Goodes , a great footballer, a great Australian.

You hope in retirement he gets the respect and recognition he merits, something that was sadly absent in his final season.

    Glen!

  2. Stuart Hunter says

Jan, that is wonderful. Thanks for sharing. Can’t wait for tomorrow to give both Adam and Pykey the send off they richly deserve. And a win.

    Stuart

  3. Great poem Jan.

What a great footballer, but more importantly, what a great man. Thanks for the memories Goodesy.
    Go bloods!

  4. Glen Potter says

Cheer, cheer! Well said, Jan. I echo Glen’s sentiments.
Would be marvellous to be at the SCG for his lap of honour. Good luck, tomorrow.
    Glen P.

  5. Nice Jan. Was a shame to have his career end in such a negative fashion. As a champion footballer he deserved better.

  6. Keiran Croker says

    Well done Jan.
Sadly I’ll miss Goodesy’s lap of honour, as I am travelling in the USA.
I will be there in spirit though. Best wishes to Adam and Pykey too!
    Cheers, Keiran.

  7. Ross Treverton says

Superb Jan. Beautifully crafted. I only wish l could have been at the game. Watching on TV doesn’t give the same sense of occasion, but the crowd was great and the reception magnificent!

  8. jan courtin says

    Thank you, one and all
A true champion, our Goodesy, and as South supporters would say about our other champion Bobby Skilton, it’s been a privilege and honour to have been involved – in some small way – in his life as a Swan!
    Thank you
    Jan
