Peter Bedford, now 70 years old, is a former great South Melbourne footballer (rover) and also a fine first class cricket player. He grew up in Port Melbourne where cricket was his first love, playing his first district game as a 16 years old.


As a footballer, he won the Brownlow in 1970 and was South’s Best and Fairest 1969, 1970, 1971,1973,1975 and was leading goalkicker 3 times. He was captain 1973-76 and played 178 games for South Melbourne and 13 games for Victoria. He is in the South Melbourne / Sydney Swans Team of The Century and has been inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame. Peter also played 39 games for Victoria as a cricketer – a talented batsman and leg spin bowler.


Peter started his football career playing 52 games at Port Melbourne, following in his father’s footsteps – they are both in Port Melbourne’s Team of The Century. Peter was best on ground playing in the centre in their 1966 Grand Final win.


Before moving to South Melbourne in 1968, he was approached by Port Adelaide (SANFL), and encouraged by Sir Donald Bradman so that he could also play in the South Australian Cricket Team. He chose South Melbourne instead.


He finished his VFL career with 8 games at Carlton before returning to Port Melbourne to play anoth 17 games.
